Girls attempt real-life version of video game
Residents alarmed; teens could be charged
Beacon Journal staff report

Five teenage girls from Portage County face potential criminal charges after attempting to play a real-life version of Super Mario Bros.

The Portage County Hazardous Materials Unit and Bomb Detection Unit were called in to downtown Ravenna on Friday morning after seventeen suspicious packages -- boxes wrapped in gold wrapping paper with question marks spray painted on them -- had alarmed residents.

Boxes were found at the Immaculate Conception Church on West Main Street, the Portage County Courthouse, Deluxe Pastries, the corner of Cherry Way and Main Street, Reed Memorial Library, Ravenna High School and a residence at Sanford and Main streets.

Five girls -- age 16 and 17 -- claimed responsibility for making and placing the packages. The girls said they found an Internet site that included step-by-step instructions for creating replicas of blocks featured in the game.

The Ravenna Police Department will be working with the Portage County Prosecutor's Office regarding possible criminal charges as a result of the game.

Obviously the kids should get off.  It was harmless fun.  But the authorities were right to bring in the bomb squad.  You can't just look at boxes that are left in public like that and say, "Looks harmless to me.  Let's not worry about it."

I read that in my local newspaper.  Yes I live in Ohio and only 40-50 miles from the town this happened in.  The reaction the police had does not shock me around here at all.  They have nothing better to do than give people crap for trying to have a little fun.

And the whole thing about us re-electing the president sucks.  The state government in Ohio doesn't know its @ss from a hole in the ground.

Sorry if I have ranted too much but it has been a bad day/week at work here and I needed to vent.

I live about 15 miles from there and I'm not surprised.  You just can't do stupid stuff like that these days.  I do think they should get off though.

Oh, and I'm one of the ones responsible for George W being in office and I'm damn proud of it, along with about 3.5 other million voters that put us over the top.  Stop whinning about losing the election already it was like 2 years ago and it wasn't even close like the previous election.

The kids should have kept their mouths shut.  I doubt the police would have even tried to get finger prints off of those boxes.  I'd be pist if the police spent money and time to do a proper investigation over it, but the police did what I'd expect/want them to do after they were alerted to the boxes.

It wasn't worth getting arrested for.

In Ohio's defence, I do look for arcade machines and parts often on ebay, and I found that there is quite a lot of stuff to be found in Ohio Arcade-wise.

I've considered moving there just for that reason... ;D
