Atari 5200 Emulation - Atari800win
« on: April 01, 2006, 07:14:38 pm »
I'm trying to use Atari800win to emulate the Atari5200.  I tried using MESS, but it doesn't seem to like a lot of the games I have (Atari800win will play all of them).  Is anyone else using this emulator?  I can't seem to get it to load a cart from the command line.  The help files only reference the GUI.  How are other people using this, using Howard C's keypress wrapper?

Thanks.

I've used it in my cab before w/ the wrapper.  Use the following command line:  atari800win.exe -5200 -cart

One other thing....

In the Misc menu, go to Task Control, and uncheck Confirm On Exit.  That way you will not be nagged every time the wrapper wants to kill the program.

Awesome.  Thanks for the help.

Is there a way to pass on the command line wich cart type it is?  For example, some carts load fine, other I need to respond to a drop box.  Is there a way to send that on the command line?

Thanks.  Brian

What 5200 games were you having trouble with in MESS?

Also, does Atari800Win support AtariXL and Atari 8-bit games as well?  The homepage really does not state what this emulator supports ....so I can not tell.

Name them...  I couldn't get Choplifter to work, Joust, Ateroid.  Those were the main reasons to HAVE a 5200 :)

Yeah, it supports the XL and 8-bits.  Can't get past that ROM issue though.  Not all of them require you to pick, but some do...those won't work on a cab :(  I know the images are good, they work, etc.

Where do you get Howard's wrapper for AtariXL?  Why is it needed?

Is AtariXLWin allowed to be executed from the command line?

Haven't played with the XL.  I'm trying to get the 5200 part to work.  You need to wrapper to exit using the escape key.  If there's no way to pass the cart type, I might be screwed on the 5200.

I just installed the jum52 emulator and it plays Joust, Asteroids and Choplifter fine.

This is how I must start the emulator to get it to display:

Quote
emulator_commandline     [emurootpath]\jum52\jum52.exe "[rompath]\[name].[romext]"{dosbox}{safelaunch}

The default keys are:

Exit = ESC(go back to menu) + Q (quit)
Start Game = F1
Movement = Arrow keys
RightCtrl = Fire
RightShift = Fire

Now I use the Hagstrom keybaord encoder so I can program one button push to execute an ESC+Q sequence .... so my Mame cab "exit" button can still be used ...... not sure if this is a big deal for you on your cab....... but at least you should have an option to play those games .....

PS:  I downloaded the Atari800Win, started the EXE file but can not determine how to start a game  ..... how do you load a game?

Hi,

I don't know if it could help you, but i just put online on my web site (http://www.Atomicfe.com) a plug'n play module  based on MESS that is preconfigured for now  for :  Atari 5200 , Atari 7800 , Vectrex and Supervision.

You just have to copy your roms in adhoc folders.

Youk

I'll have to play with jum52 as I think that might be a better solution for me.  Doesn't play all the ROMs that Atari800Win can, but it also doesn't ask me what type of cart it is...big plus.

As for loading ROMs...first, you need to download all the Atari ROMs, for the 5200, XL, Basic, etc.  There's four of them you need total.  Then, if you are going to use the UI, it's File-Attach Cart.  Otherwise, I've been using the commandline... "atari800win 5200 -cart whatever.bin"

I'm going to see if I can use Howard's wrapper to get jum52 to quit with one keystroke.  Then I'll be okay I think...

I have not tried evey game, but I configured MEss and Jum52 for the Atari5200  so hopefully betweenthese two I will be able to play most all of them .....

I believe I tried "Attach Cartridge" but nothing happened ..... might try it again for fun when I get home ... since I would like to try to get the AtariXL games working.    Are the AtariXL games considered "-cart" as well from the command line and do these need to have ".bin" extensions as well...

When you got the 5200 game to load in Atari800Win, then how did you move around the game?  I mean what keybaord keys were you using?  I know F3 is used for "select" and F4 starts the game, but I can not figure out how to move ....

For the AtariXL, honestly I have no idea as I haven't tried.  I was trying to load just one emulator at a time (prevents me from spending all my time playing games instead of working to load new ones :)

Keystrokes, I'm at work so I'll have to check it out again once I get home....I think it was the arrow keys and the right ctrl and the "/", but again I'd have to double check.

I realize you were only trying to get Atari5200 to work ... however, I was thinking the keymapping would be the same for the Atari800Win for both Atari5200 and Atari800XL games.

I guess when I started my Atari800XL games, then I could not move around the screen at all so I was wondering whether you had to do anything special to use the keyboard to actually play the games ....
