Randy Fromm DVD's .... See review!
« on: March 29, 2006, 10:44:49 pm »
Hi all,

I did a search on this and it seems several members on these DVDs.  My arcade collection is growing and of course several need work.  I have an electrical contractors license so I no electrical but my electronics knowledge is very limited.  Would this set be worth owning.  The ad sounds great but ads are supposed to.

I guess it would depend on which DVDs your talking about.  I've seen some of the pinball repair DVD and it's pretty much him teaching a class with a camcorder running.

I have the tape set and they are pretty much all like that, but I did learn quite a bit from them. They are cheesy but educational  :lame:

I pretty much figured if you didn't know what I was talking about you couldn't answer my question.

Just the arcade stuff especially the electronics, schematics, monitor, and IC related stuff.  I was thinking of purchasing the whole set with bluebook, DVD's and CD's.

So would it be worth the $300+ he is asking?

Not sure if they are worth the $300. I could NOT see myself paying $300 for the set, but then again, I'm cheap  :P and wife would kick my  :censored:
I bought my VHS set from ebay much cheaper than that.

Yes, but there is a -smurf- load of great info mixed in there...

Yes, and you can call him about any technical problem, anytime...

All the DVD content, manuals, etc. are also available from Randy via his technical support subscription.  For $39.95/year,  you get access to everything.  The videos are in standard podcast formats and the docs are in .pdf.

He just started this about a two months ago.  I think it is a very good deal - for novices and pros.

Awesome man.  Thanks for the heads up.  This will be a great way to see if I think it's worth shelling out the duckets.

What is the quality of the video podcast? He should have a sample of what it is he is offering on the site.

The quality is good.  I'm guessing that all his video sessions were shot on VHS over the years, so they all look fair to good.  On the podcasts I've watched, the camera is fixed in the classroom and there are closeups of key parts or actions.

The subscription site is new and Randy mentioned he'd continue to improve it over time.  Given the volume of information there and the $39.95 cots, I can't complain about the site features or content.  It will take me some time to review and watch it all...

I have nearly all of them.  The video quality varies but who cares?  You're not there to be entertained.

If you are an electrician, you have the base skills to understand everything he talks about, and they are totally worth it.  Sounds like that podcast thing is the way to go.  That way you can download it all and pop it to DVD on your own.

O.K.

If you are getting into the hobby of collecting or intend to I suggest you subscribe to the on-line tech thing.

I have learned more in a couple of days about electronics and video game repair than months of searching and lurking.

Everything is broken down so it's easy to understand and you will learn a TON.

I would write a review and post it but the review section is called "Hardware Reviews".

At the price of the subscription a single repair will more than pay for your year.

Randy Rocks.

Comes on media, right?  Is it liquid?  No?  Post your review.

I bought the DVDs off his site almost a week and a half ago, still not here yet. When I emailed him when they would ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- I got a "2-3 weeks depending if I am in town or not". No mention if he is in town, on his way home, or out of town for whatever amount of time. Not impressed off that alone right now.

DVDs arrived today, much sooner than the 2-3 weeks stated. Haven't had a chance to view them yet.

As I stated in the review I did not purchase the DVD's.  I subscribed to the technical site.  Everything was very professional and registration was extremely fast.  I can't comment one way or the other on anything mailordered but Randy does seem to have his sHite together as far as I can tell.
