should I upgrade my psp
« on: March 28, 2006, 07:59:40 pm »
I have a version 1.51 psp that is near mint. I hardly use it and when I do its to play emulators. I dont buy any of the new games for it because I dont want to have to upgrade. But they are starting to come out with some really good games. Im looking for some opinions on if I should upgrade.
I don't know if you know this but I'm sort of a big deal. I own many leather bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I upgraded my 1.5 about two weeks ago. I had to think about it for a couple of days, because I really wasn't sure I wanted to do it. I had Genesis, NES and SNES emulators on there with a 1 gig memory card. I played with it for about a month or so, then rarely touched it. Seems like worthwhile titles are finally coming out now. I'm playing MX vs. ATV On The Edge every day, and my buddy says Syphon Filter is the greatest handheld game he's ever played.

The web browser was kind of interesting to mess around with, but its extremely limited. Ultimately, I decided if I wanted to play the old games in emulation, I already have a desktop PC and the MAME cab. No regrets on doing the upgrade so far.

God no.

A ton more games have been cracked now, and there are only a few games that cannot be played on a 1.5 PSP.  You can use the new launchers to launch your UMD games without having to upgrade.

i recently upgraded for megaman powered up. its a sweet game. very difficult tho. i dont regret updating. most of the homebrew is bleh. and all the rest of the software is spotty or requires to mush effort to get working.

PS2NFO has a list of compatible games.

Street fighter Alpha actually JUST became playable today, although you can't save.  It runs off an extracted iso method, but it's pretty simple.  The game is a lot of fun though.  I'm not sure about Syphon Filter.

I also have Megaman working as well.  I'll stick with my 1.5 :)

I just bought one for the wife a few days ago...     came installed with 2.0 and with the game "Daxter" it updated to 2.6....  pretty much just bought it for her to use (altho I do plan on playing "Medievil Resurrection").....

I've been on the fence regarding the issue lately and Syphon Filter and Daxter have been starting to push me in the other direction!  I'm thinking of biting the bullet and upgrading...

now you know that isnt exactly true, you need to do all kinds of procedures to get firmware required games to load.

here are *my* good reasons to update, not saying anyone should...

-i like the web browser
-selecting the themes and setting the wallpaper, i know you can still do this with home brew apps, but this is integrated and works well
-and a big one for me (but there might be some home brew app for it as well)...
the avc video codec. looks great and is a big plus for me cause i dont want to spend good money on umd movies. some people may not think its so great.

and in the future there will be the ps1 emulator and perhapse a chunk of the playstation online platform. that will turn a bunch of people i would think.

I'm actually on 2.0 now... I upgraded before I even knew what was going on in the homebrew/emu scene.   :(  So I'm kinda caught in the middle.... I still don't have 100% of the homebrew stuff out there working on my PSP (I refused to downgrade after a friend of mine bricked his PSP attempting to do so) and I can't play the newer games either.

Maybe I'll wait a little longer....

That's really up for debate.  "all kinds of procedures" is hardly how I'd describe my experience.  I ripped the UMD with a few minutes work once I saw there was a pack to fix the iso.  I spent another 5 minutes replacing and fixing a few files, and that was that.  And now I can play Daxter on my memstick and keep GTA in my UMD drive.

Homebrew and loaders are ridiculously easy to install on a 1.5 PSP, and as scary as some people make "ha><0ring t3h isozz" seem.. it's really only replacing a few files.   Drag.... Drop.... Done.

And just to play devil's advocate, here are my reasons why these are irrelevant to me (I want to stress the "TO ME" part... I'm not bashing anyone's decsion)

- Web on the PSP is not that hot IMO.  It's clunky, I have a laptop, and if I really want to surf the web on a small screen, I'll use my PDA.  I'm all for integration and not having to carry multiple gadgets, but teh PSP browser is not very good IMO.  Also, there ARE browsers for 1.5 PSPs that work very similarly to the 2.0+ browser... but again, I'm not a big fan either way, so internet is not a problem for me.

- Once you install the program needed, you can change themes/wallpapers very easily on 1.5.  I guess it's not technically "integrated" but it certainly isn't difficult.

- AVC is a good point, I don't believe its possible on 1.5s at all.  I occasionally watch videos on my PSP, but it is very rare.  Again, for me.... I'll watch video on my laptop.  I have to have it with me, so why not?  I love the PSP screen... but I don't really find staring at it for a 2 hour movie appealing.

The PS1 emu may very well make me upgrade, but it depends on how well it actually works and how it's implemented.  I'm just not sure giving up all my homebrew and emulators for ONLY PS1 emulation is worth it.  I still have a PS1 and can play it at home, so I'm not sure just how enticing it will be for me.  I'll have to wait and see just how well Sony implements it.

i doubt psp will be able to emulate ps1 games..I mean random snes games dont run full speed on psp so ps1 games will probly run at like 10-15 fps... :dizzy:

its not all about power, its more based on the right person. the guys at FPSCE (http://projects.davejansen.com/fpsece/) know what theyre doing when it comes to emulation,

ive been playing around with their PSX emulator for almost a year on my PDA, and the minimum requirements on a PDA that are required are to run it are like 20mb rom/ram , running on a 200-624mhz processor, no video ram. and everything is almost silky smooth.

as for SNES,Genisis,NES,GBA, etc its no problem to run on PDA, but then again the development of these emulators have had more TIME*
