Learning to Play a Guitar
« on: March 27, 2006, 04:37:58 pm »
My latest "impulse buy/useless hobby" is an eelectric geetar.
I bought a good used guitar, and a great little amp, but now what?

My friends showed me the basics, but I want to actually learn, and not just make loud noises while AC/DC is playing in the background.  What's a good DVD that teaches this?  I want to start from scratch, because the basics I know are probably all wrong.

try www.wholenote.com
It has a wide variety of lessons. I reccomend you learn some covers though, its a good way to get going and feel like you're improving, plus it works finger skills. There's lots of on-line theory available, I reccomend you mix it up.

While you can learn on the net nowadays, a good beginners guitar book is always a good place to start IMO.

Once you've got the basics, trying to play covers (as sodapop says) is a great thing too.  Try to play a couple of your favourite songs and your willpower to learn will rise all the time until you can do it.  Then learn something else...

The first few weeks are the ones that makes or breaks the hobby. Some people just don't get into it and end up never picking up the guitar for more than a few minutes at a time.

I reccommend finding a good teacher, usually a teacher will adapt to you and help you learn to play in a style you personally dig.

And theory sucks too, I still need to figure a lot of that out...

My vote goes for a good teacher.
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...

I bought a learn blue grass DVD, on the back it says the lessons start with picking up a pick and goes into playing full songs.

It didn't lie, the guy picked up the pick and then started playing a full song.  Very frustrating.

Trying to learn from a DVD sux.

I'm going to take a couple of 1/2 hour lessons.

I've booked marked the other suggestions so when I understand the basics I'll be able to progress to them.

Thanks
