MAME v.104 with v.103 romset
« on: March 27, 2006, 02:00:54 pm »
What exactly is the downside of using a romset that doesn't match the current version of MAME?  Is it just that certain games won't work, or is there more to it?

TIA

Nope, that is pretty much it.  You can "ugrade" the affected roms usually with clrmame and tools of that sort.

You shouldn't even need to use clrmamepro when they are that close. I am actually doing that right now: I have a 103 romset, and am using 104u6. Works fine...

(Before I get flamed - you might get some issues with some games, so if you notice any problems, then that is why. In that case, use a rom manager to fix the problem)

Yes, you should.  If the rom for a game changed you need to use clrmame or romcenter to tell you that.

Hence the second part of his post:

the forum suggests i start a new topic, but i think it's easier this way...

what about using mame 0.53 with a 1.03 romset, i assume there'll be loads of roms that dont work, but ive been unable to aquire a romset for the version im running. i chose 0.53 because the cpu i have in my cab is only about 400mhz.

is there a way to 'downgrade' the 1.03 romset to make it compatable with mame 0.53?

i originally had about 30 games on the cab then when i added the rest of the set, none of the additions worked, and some of the original 30 even stopped working. if it at all makes a difference, im using mamewah as a frontend

thx

Do you still use Windows 98/ME with your old puter?  Simple clean reinstallation of Windows will speed up your computer considerably and will get rid of unneded clutter.  You can then run latest Mame no problem with smaller games.  Hopefully you defragment your harddrive from time to time, also?

Just a heads up and it will save you lots of trouble juggling new and old roms.
