NEC Multisync 3PG - SVGA problems
« on: March 26, 2006, 09:51:21 pm »
Recently I picked up this MultiSync monitor from Freecycle, I tested out its s-video connections and they work fine, but today I had a spare minute and thought I'd try out the SVGA 15-pin and the result was less than pretty:

If it helps, this is a Via Epia MII with the desktop set at 800x600 (which I understand this monitor should be capable of).

Here's a hi-res photo of the back with all its inputs and switches showing:

I'm going to try and get hold of a manual, but off-hand does anyone know what could be up here?
I'm sure it's probably some bad dip-switch setting, but thought I'd throw it out here first anyway.

Looks similar to what used to happen to my 1084s in RGB mode.

I later discovered it was the seperate sync lines from the ArcadeVGA. I ended up using composite sync instead and all worked fine.
Now in a tasty new flavour.

What was the refresh rate set at?
Can you try it at 640x480.  I know it is supposed to run svga but I have one of those and it doesn't look that great at 800x600.

I think Windows is set to 60Hz refresh rate.
J_K_M_A_N emailed me a scan of the manual, it explains what all the RGB dip-switches do; when I get home I'll try the default dip-switch settings and see how it goes. Thanks again JK!

I have 2 that have run at 1024x768 with a certain driver. I don't remember which though. I haven't been using them for computer anymore. I just use them for xbox and TV now. I am pretty sure it was an NEC driver but for a different monitor. I am also pretty sure it was at 60 hertz refresh rate. I don't remember what the refresh rate was for 800x600 off hand.

Looking at your pic at 800x600 it looks like its got vertical sync ok, but issues with horizontal sync.

I'm thinking either it needs some caps replacing (possible, all these presentation monitors must be getting on, but the NEC's tend to be well built) or possibly your voltage levels are right on the edge for what its looking for. Could be something else entirely though....

Oops, I should have replied here last night- I flicked all the RGB1 dip-switches down to their default positions (thanks again for the manual JK!) and now it looks perfect!

Glad its working - DIP switches nothing to do with sync levels (TTL?) by any chance?

Incidentally any chance I could grab a copy of that manual? I've got a XM29 Plus (aka 2960G) with manual and an XM29 (aka 2950G) which I believe are close Euro equivalents of the the 3pg/4pg. My xm29 is identical to yours at the back (dip switches etc...) but I don't have those controls at the top of the monitor...
