Kind of hard to follow what you are doing.
ArcadeOS With Arcade Monitor works OK
MAME with Arcade Monitor does not work

What version of MAME are you using? what games are you trying? What resolution are they?
What video card are you using?
From your question it looks like ArcadeOS is working as expected, but you need to configure MAME to work with Arcade Monitor

you have not answered any of the questions. What Video Card are you using?
What version of MAME are you using.

Are you using Windows, or DOS?  ArcadeOS and dmame should be run under DOS *only*.

As for your sound issue, you didn't mention your sound hardware.  The included drivers only work on those particular chipsets.

i use windows xp, i aint that much of a hero in DOS. :(

as for the sound problem, i use avance97. so i guess, i'll have to buy a new soundcard to get the music going?

ArcadeOS is a DOS ONLY application.  You will have other issues at hand then the ones you have already encountered.

I've heard of AC'97 sound drivers for DOS, but never explored them.

XP can only drop down to 800x600, most likely that is your problem...

I'm running Windows XP SP2 at 640x480 @ 60Hz....so it is possible.

True enough, but you had to apply a hack to get it down there...

You can do it right from the control panel, no hacks needed.  Granted, it's a PITA, but possible.
