Mortal Kombat 2

Does anyone know why the sound in MK2 would be so low. It is normal when  in service mode and turning the volume up there but when it goes back to in game almost silent. This is the only game that I know of that does this.

I had that problem before and I had to delete the cfg file and nvram file and reopen it then put the volume up... try that.
If that doesn't work you may want to try redownloading the rom.

I could be wrong, but I believe it has something to do with the sound system that midway used on mk2 - and some simliar games - mk3 etc.  It's any game that uses the Midway Digital Compression System (DCS) - Amplified Mono - which mk2 was the first to do so. I'm not too sure of a fix for it; perhaps there's hacked roms or something, but I really have no idea. I happen to own a mk2 arcade machine, so no need for me =)

I think it is only mk2 that has this problem. All the other midway cames that use the dcs sound fine.

Yep i checked my other games and they have good sound.

I wonder if you could take the sound file from one game that works and put it in mk2.

Setting the volume to max in bios of game works great while you play it, but if you exit the game and reload the game in mame again, its back to the low volume.  this use to work, but they may have broken it again some time ago.  It used to work for me, but doesn't anymore.  Very annoying especially because lots of people like to play this game on my cabinet.
