Capcom games are squished?
« on: February 23, 2003, 11:51:27 pm »
I'm running DOS MAME and have noticed that the Capcom games seem to be squished vertically.  All other games look just fine, but it seems like Street Fighter and the like aren't running at proper resolution.  I'm using an ATI Radeon 7500 and a TV.  On the PC I can manually stretch the picture (on the monitor), but am wondering what the fix is for TV screens.

Thanks,
Odondon

They are supposed to be "squished".  Capcom games displayed in a letterbox format.

Thanks for playing! (tm planetjay)

You could always "turn off" the "enforce aspect ratio" option and it will fill the screen more to your liking (maybe). Give it a try!  ;D

I find that the 'keepaspect' option actually causes INCORRECT aspect ratio with the last few (Win)MAME versions in loads of games.  I use scanlines atm, I think it is OK without.

I think I'm the only person who has this problem tho...

Yes it does, read some of my previous posts on the subject... it's due to half of the mame devs not knowing what they are talking about (respectfully)

With hwstretch on capcom games actually are incorrectly stretched to the full size of the screen unless you pass a custom aspect ratio argument (which i do and lazarus has support for)

Okay, so I'm talking DOS MAME here, and I don't want them to be squished.  Nevermind what the original devlopers wanted.  Ken is all of a sudden a short, squat midget.  It don't look right to me, and I'd like to fix it.  Anyone have a solution?  Remember, DOS MAME, not windows :)

Nope, it can't be done as this is how it's SUPPOSED to look.  You can try sending a custom aspect ratio but it would look wrong as again, it's SUPPOSED to look that way.  Go check and console port and measure, he's the right height.... ;-)

On my PC, I can manually stretch the picture so it looks right (regardless if it is actually not supposed to look like that or not).  I guess I will try forcing a custom resolution.  Just thought someone might have run into this already and save me some time :)

Sorry, I don't mean Capcom games...but it seems Sega System 32 games, Taito F3 games and a lot more appear massively squashed vertically on my setup (not using hwstretch) - I mean like 3 inches tall, full screen width (with scanlines+ka).  Odd.

So, other than turning scan lines on, does anyone have a resolution that'll make the Capcom games as close to full screen as possible in DOS MAME?

Thanks,
Odonadon

Capcom games run at 384x224... in an arcade, they adjust the vertical height and expand the image until it fits the screen.

So unless you're running some sort of stretching algorithm, they will definitely look "squished", as your monitor is probably adjusted to display 240 lines, not 224.
