Hard drive help! Did I buy the wrong kind?
« on: March 22, 2006, 03:47:12 pm »
Today I opened up my computer, thinking I would finally be installing the last of the new parts and finishing it to is cabinet-worthy state. But unfortunately, I hit a snag-- a  very big one. After I had finished screwing the new, 80GB HDD into place, itt turns out that the one I ordered doesn't connect to my PC's hard drive ribbon cable connector! I have no clue what's up with this. The old hard drive had a nice, typical "pin" connection in the back. The new one's connection looks more akin to that of a videogame cartridge. I've included several pictures that will hopefully help figure out what I need to do (please forgive the poor quality, I took 'em with my phone). From top to bottom they are 1) The new hard drive's connectors 2) My PC's hard drive ribbon connector, and 3) my old hard drive's connection pins.

So, is there some kind of adapter I'll need to buy to make it all work, or am I better off trying to return it to NewEgg and try get one with the right connectors? Thanks in advance!

Looks like you bought an SATA hard drive and you were expecting an IDE. If you bought it from NewEgg they should take it back no questions asked and give you a credit. Exactly the same thing happened to me a few years back (I ordered an SATA drive in a hurry, not reading its specs, chose it because it was cheapest), I sent it back and got an IDE within a week.
NewEggs RMA dept kicks ass!

By the way, you could buy a PCI SATA card and hook it up with that, but those cards can sometimes give trouble if you're booting from an SATA drive on the PCI card. Exchanging it for an IDE drive would probably be less hassle.

Yeah, I'll probably drop a line to NewEgg's RMA sometime this evening. Thanks for helping clear that up! :)
