HELP: Wanting to switch from Azureus to uTorrent ....
« on: March 18, 2006, 12:03:42 pm »

I am new to this .... so this is what I have done .... and would like some help.

I installed Azureus and opened a few torrent files and have successfully downloaded all the related file packs. Azureus has then seeded these file packs and I am know successfully sharing them with other folks.

I then experienced some weird slugglish problems, as well as some other funky stuff with Azureus. Asking around ... it was clear to me that uTorrent was another BitTorrent application which is a very scaled-down version which might make my life easier. Anyway, I gave it a try by downloading one torrent file pack with it and it worked great. I am currently sharing this file pack through uTorrent now with no problems.

QUESTION:

My goal now is to stop using Azureus altogether and somehow update "uTorrent" to have it continue my current "Azureus" uploads which are going on. This way I can uninstall Azureus and just have uTorrenty. How can this be done?

Detailed descriptions would be a super bonus.

No detailed descriptions necessary.

Just close Azureus and load up uTorrent.  Open all the torrent files in uTorrent, and it should recognize the folders the files had been saved to.  You'll automatically start seeding.

You can seed any torrent with any torrent application, there is nothing special about say Azureus vs uTorrent, or BitComet vs ABC... you can open any torrent with any program, even if you started it with something else.

I thought if I opened up a Torrent file in uTorrent then it would try and download all files again.    How does uTorrent know which directory I downloaded the files to with Azureus?   Is the actual "xxx.Torrent" file updated with this information?

Anyway, this is great news .... so easy .....

unless you changed your settings, the torrent will create the file structure in the folder that the .torrent file is in.  When you open the torrent, it will see teh files already there, and update itself.  That's how you can continue a torrent if you shut it down.  It searches for the files and only downloads what you don't have.

Absolute worst case is this:  uTorrent won't know where the files are.  Open the torrent and point it to where you downloaded the files.  That's it, it'll take it from there.  You probably won't even need to do this though, as I said.  Good luck.

Yes, this worked kind of......

When I "moved" the first and second torrent over into uTorrent, I had to perform a "Forced Recheck" on them which scanned for the files and found that I had "100%" and it started seeding the two torrents .... as expected...

When I "moved" my third torrent over (25Gig of stuff), it found that I was at "100%" as well, but then it just sits there in a "Finished" state.  Basically, it did not indicate "Seeding" like the other two torrents did.  Should uTorrent start seeding the file automatically or does it only seed it if people are currently requesting it?   If I have to do something for this torrent to be seeding, then please tell me what to do ... thanks.

You nailed it.

A torrent can only seed if peers are asking for it.  If no one wants the files, there's no one to give em to ;)

In some cases, people could have their settings messed up which stops them from seeding, but you're seeding other files, so that isn't it.

It could be a tracker problem too... if that particular torrent is on a different tracker, it may be down.

Basically though, don't worry about it.  It's likely just no one is requesting the files right now.  No problem.

Azerus is a purely Java based program.

Java is having some major problems playing well with others since the last release.  The most notable problem is that Java + video overlays results in the resolution of the video card resetting to some god awfully ultra-low res setting,  at least on Nvidia cards.

I swear it bumps it down to like 240x120.

Avoid apps coded in Java until Sun does some bug fixing.

If a file is finished it's ready to seed.  However, if your network settings only allow 2 connections then you will only seed 2 files.  So you need to go through the network settings to see how many connections you are allowing, how many downloads/how many uploads, etc.
