Arcade VGA issues
« on: March 10, 2006, 08:08:55 am »
I wrote his last night and thought I posted it but don't see it. Our electricity went out so perhaps it was not sent yet, but anyway...
I am having some issues. I installed my ArcadeVGA card last night and hooked it to the monitor (Happs Vision Pro). when I start the computer I see the bios, XP splash screen, then windows. After about 20-25 seconds of windows the screen goes black (but you can still see a light scanning going on) and the scan slows way down. How do I keep it on? the resolution is set to 640 x 480 - 16 color as is default on the arcade VGA.

Hit F8 like you are going to boot in Safe Mode.  INSTEAD OF Safe Mode, choose to boot in VGA MODE.  That will get you up where you can load the AVGA drivers.

I tried that but only for the option to start the computer from a floppy, CD Rom, or Hard drive. Did I miss something when I tried?

You have to hit F8 right after the boot BIOS screen disappears on the screen before the Windows XP logo comes up.  You should see a little bar going across the lower third of the screen from left to right.  That is where you hit F8 and you should get these options (these are from memory):

Start Windows Normally
Safe Mode
VGA Mode
Safe Mode with Network Support
Command Prompt

I think those are the options (some not all).  Use the arrow keys to go down to VGA MODE and hit Enter.

Weird. What do you mean by "see a light scanning going on" ?

I use Win98. I never even bothered to install the AVGA drivers. I set Windows to 640x480. It displays fine.

NO MORE!!

I had the same issue with my installing my avga card, but I forget what fixed it.

If the computer ever had a different ati card you will have to completly remove the old drivers. There is a utility you can dounload from the ultimarc site to do this.

that's all I can think of atm. If all else fails drop andy an email.

The whole image gets compressed really small.  I've had at least two other people with the same issue (plus me) and all of us were able to make it work by booting in VGA mode and installing the AVGA drivers.

When the screen goes dark. There is a very faint like 4 dot scan. If one wasn't looking for it, you probably would not see it.

Ok Mark ,
The f8 worked. When I went to install the drivers, it said that I needed directx8 installed. Ok so I take out the AVGA card put back in the normal card. Take the computer upstairs, get networking working. download the latest and greatest Directx. Took it back downstairs, put the AVGA card in, brought the computer up and tried to install again. It said again that direct x 8 was not installed.

What do I do now?

Sometimes I curl up in the fetal position and cry hysterically until I feel better.  It won't fix your problem, but at least you'll feel better afterwards.

In all seriousness you may need to install Direct X again.  Also, are you installing the drivers before the ATI control panel?  You have to install the drivers, reboot, and then install the ATI control panel.

I didn't cry in a fetal position, but I found that if I stuck my head in a door way and slammed the door a few times, once I passed out from the pain, I did not have to think about it for a while.  ;)

Actually, It must have been on the brain as I was dreaming about installing drivers and fixing my pinball machine all night last night.

I had read not to install the CP untill the drivers were loaded. I have pretty much scoured the Ultimarc site, just trying to find any more helpful nuggets of info. I will try to install the drivers again.  :P

Any luck?  You'll have to un-install the control panel before re-installing the drivers.

Hey Mark, How are ya.

I Havent installed the control panel.
I finally e-mailed Andy tonight. Here is what I wrote...

e-mail 1
Hey Andy,
Getting a little frustrated. I have the AVGA card installed. I tried to install the drivers but it said that I needed directx 8. I went to the direct x website but they are on 9 now. I downloaded it and installed it. I then tried the drivers again and am still getting the same results. I can not get the drivers loaded. Can you offer any suggestions?

Mike

e-mail 2
Hey Andy,

Still trying. I have checked the Direct x troubleshooter and it said that direct x is there and functioning normally.

Just FYI, I did not have a ATI card installed prior to this. But, I do not know what was installed on this machine prior to me getting it.
So, I ran the ATI uninstall thing just in case.

When I run the AVGA driver installer (XP) it says Direct X 8 not installed, please install it before installing the display drivers. Being that I checked the Direct x I pressed ok and it asked do you want to continue. I clicked yes this time. It brought up the ATI windows XP Driver splash screen. then an install shield screen comes up. I click next. User Agreement...Next
A box pops up that says severe. INF error. Video Driver not found.

I click ok. Then a pop up says...set up was unable to complete the instillation. Please try to set up the vga adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup.

That's where I am now.
Thanks in advance
Mike

I also got the message "Please try to set up the vga adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup."

This means you need to install the video card when windows detects it and let windows select the driver for you, which should be the Standard VGA display driver. Then after the video card is installed with the Standard VGA driver then you can install the AVGA driver. You may have to go to the device manager and remove all devices under display adapters and then scan for hardware changes so it re-detects the video card. If when you try to let windows install the Standard VGA driver it always selects a diffrent driver, such as a default ATI driver or the AVGA drivers, you may have to start windows in VGA Mode or Safe Mode. I'm not to sure on that part because I've only installed the AVGA card on win 98 so far and the ultimarc website says XP chooses an ATI driver by default.

At one point the drivers for the AVGA card got really confused on my win 98 setup and I could never get it to boot all the way into normal mode, only safe mode. I had to start in safe mode remove all display adapters from the device manager. I still had trouble when I tried to reinstall the AVGA drivers after that. I then uninstalled the ATI control panel, AVGA drivers, verified that all devices were removed from the display adapters. I downloaded the ATI driver removal tool from ultimarc and ran that. I previously used an Nvidia card to setup windows so I downloaded detonator destroyer and Nasty File Remover to get rid of the Nvidia drivers (Nasty File Remover also has an ATI option). After I was sure everything was clean I setup the video card with the Standard VGA driver and then installed the AVGA driver.

Since you were getting a direct X error you may want to verify which version windows thinks you have installed. Go to Start->Run, and type dxdiag and click ok. This will bring up a program that should give you info on the direct x version.

I will try this tonight.

I have had ideas about wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP with the arcade vga card in while this is happening. Any thoughts? This way everything is brought to zero.

So you did a fresh Windows XP install (format and install) using the Arcade VGA through the whole proccess and it still wont work?

I would try this from the ultimarc website next:

Quote
Blue Screens in XP/2000 Windows XP may try to invoke the built-in Microsoft ATI driver and this will not work with the ArcadeVGA card, and causes a blue-screen error. If you see this, re-start and hold down "F8" and choose to start in Safe Mode, then install the ATI driver from the ArcadeVGA CD. To do this, you will need to enter device manager, right click on the expanded video card listing under 'Display Adapters' (or, the undesignated option, if the device has not been recognized at all, and has a yellow X next to it), click on properties, go to driver tab, and click on 'update driver'. This is the only way to install the driver in safe mode, as attempting to install via ATI's setup utility will produce error messages and result in a failure to install the driver. You will need to point the driver install to the correct location on the CD as mentioned in "Forcing a driver install", further down this page.

I can't really tell what actions you are taking in what order and what series of errors you are running into, so it may just be that you are doing something wrong. But it kinda sounds like the Arcade VGA card might be bad or possibly something is wrong with your AGP slot/motherboard. You never were able to get the driver loaded ever with this Arcade VGA card correct? Maybe you can get a hold of a copy of Windows 98 just to test or possibly try installing this using a diffrent computer. If you still can't get it working in eitheir of those tests then see what Andy at Ultimarc has to say.

Good luck

I have been in conversation with him. It is slow though as we are on way different time zones.
I did not get the whole thing loaded with the AVGA in place. I had to start over with the other card because I could not read everything.
