I know this may be a long shot, but I was hoping somebody on here might be able to help me troubleshoot my son's slim ps2.  It was playing fine one night, and he said when he went to turn it off, he got shocked.  Now, when you go to turn it on, the power button stays red (standby mode) and won't turn on.  Any ideas?  Is there a fuse in it, that may have blown?

I really don't want to send this back to Sony, and would like to try and fix it myself, if possible.  Does anybody know of any other good forums that I should post my slim ps2 problem on?  Thanks in advance.

You should call customer support and tell them that he got shocked....

They might fix it for free fearing bad press and a lawsuit.

Also make sure when he's playing video games, he keeps his consoles off the carpet. I'm guessing he doesn't, but you never know.

I don't believe he had on the floor.  It sits on a shelf in the entertainment center.  I'm really not sure what happened to it, or if he dropped it, etc.  Not sure when he said he got shocked, if it was just static electricity, or something more serious.  Has anybody else experienced their slim ps2 not powering on out of standby mode?  Not sure if there is a loose connection inside, or if a fuse (if there is one) maybe blew?  Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.  Does anybody have a pdf repair manual for the slim ps2 else?

Thanks.

well, could there have been a power outage/surge when he was sleeping or sumthing? i know of a few times long ago where i would have to unplug my dreamcast/N64 for like an hour without power before it would turn on, hope that helps, if it may just be a resistor... god knows where on the slim thing...

  • Saint and Woogie let me back in!
The slim PS2's power supply is not within the case itself, its the power brick on the power cord.  It may be worth finding another one and seeing if that fixes it.  It may be possible that the power supply blew.

Tried hooking up my unit to a working unit's powersupply and tv connector, but still no luck.  The unit won't come out of standby mode (red light).  Any other ideas?

fire?  ;)

My next guess would be the power connector on the system, or something directly connected to it on the motherboard.  It may have fried something if there was a power spike.   I'm no expert on the PStwo motherboard, so I don't know where the fuse/caps are, and which ones may have blown, but it's very possible that's what it is.

How old is it? Maybe you can get it replaced where you bought it?

The slim ps2 is about 16 months old, so taking it back to where we got it, is not an option.

I'm not 100% sure, but if you do some searching on the web, you can find replacement parts for home consoles. I believe there is some sort of replacemnt PCB for the PS2, in relation to the powering up of a PS2.
