mamewah config.
« on: March 05, 2006, 12:38:00 am »
Hello, I installed Mamewah, there were problems (regsvr32.exe and paintx.dll) but I can run games using it.
Games look blurry and often the screen will lock after I load a game.
I often use Mame32 which with some adjustments produces an excellent display. But there is colour bleeding and sometimes a game is too dark.

I want to avoid the desktop and to enter mamewah immediately. How can I do so?
Also, can anybody recommend a resolution tool?

                                          THANKS

I can't help with the first problem, but if you want to boot straight into Mamewah, just put a shortcut into the startup folder located in the "All Programs" menu in the Start tab.  You can also customize your splash screen on start up.  There is a tutorial around here for that.  Just do a search.

Did you download and install the system.zip before installing mamewah?.

There is a res tool available at the Mamewah homepage.

What type of monitor and other hardware are you using?. Blurriness and color bleeding could well be related to the hardware/monitor rather than your mamewah config.

You can change many of the video settings and brightness etc in the mame.ini in your mame folder.

Either use the method Mccoy suggested or turn hibernate on (Start/Control Panel/Power Options) and set your PC to hibernate whenever it is shut down. When you shutdown from Mamewah windows will save its state and automatically boot straight back to Mamewah when it starts back up, bypassing the desktop completely, bear in mind though that using this method you won't be able to use things like a startup movie.

Hi, yes I tried to install the system files but there is an error relating to regsvr32.exe and paintx.dll. I've read that others have encountered this problem.
I downloaded a regsvr32.exe file and tried to install it, unsuccessfully.
I searched for paintx.dll on my p.c. but it was not there.

I'm using a super ls sound 25-29 cab. I don't know the monitor model.
The bleeding occurs with mame32 not mamewah. With Mamewah graphics are blurry - like running a PAL console. :'(

I am not much for help as I have not seen this exact issue but here are some links on the files you referred to:

http://www.eyebrowse.co.uk/support/products/eyebrowse/standard/errormsgs/loadimageerror_ff-lineno2.htm

http://www.intellidev.com/imagescaler/helpfile/paintx.htm

Now, the only question I have is are you using XP? If so, have you used any XP removal software that "lightens" the system. (Example is XPlight and so forth)

Thanks for your replies. I'm running Windows98SE. I was able to register paintx.dll but the setup.bat problem remains. I try to install the mamewah system files but there is an error related to regsvr32.exe and paintx.dll.
I downloaded and saved regsvr32.exe to a floppy disk and tried to install it but couldn't - there was an error.
Any suggestions?

If you registered paintx.dll OK then don't worry about the setup.bat problem.  As long as Mamewah runs and you can see your snapshots then all is ok.

If your display (in MAME) is blurry I suspect you have hardware stretch (hwstretch) turned on - edit your \mame\mame.ini file accordingly.

Thanks. The graphics are as sharp as with mame32(with some changes in the default options).
I ran 'The Simpsons' but some games would cause a crash. They would load, a window with the game name would appear and it would go to the taskbar. Some games would wobble - like the vertical hold pot should be adjusted.
Also I want to avoid the desktop after starting the pc. How can I put a mamewah shortcut in my start/programs list?
                                 thanks

Put a shortcut to mamewah in your startup folder in the start menu.  That will boot your computer into mamewah.  You can also make a customizable splash screen.  Just do a search and you will find the thread.

Hello, I put a mamewah shortcut in my start/programs folder and in my start/programs list.
I also edited the win.ini. file.
I've clicked the properties on both shortcuts and selected 'maximised' but the desktop appears and mamewah doesn't start after I start the pc.
Here's a summary of the problems I'm trying to solve:
1> mamewah will not start automatically. I've been unable to hide the desktop.
2> games load then disappear with Mamewah causing my pc to lock/crash.
3> there is colour bleeding. An example is the snk logo. I start an mvs game, the neo geo pro gear spec screen appears, the graphics are sharp but blue extends out of the snk letters. This bleeding occurs in games too, often with red.
4> Some games wobble at the 'type ok' screen, like the vertical hold should be adjusted.
 thanks

1)If you click on the Start tab on your desktop, and click "All Programs", you should have a "Startup" folder.  Put the shortcut in there.
2)Do you have Safelaunch flagged in your mame.ini within mamewah?  Check JCrouse's site for correct .ini's for any emulator.
3)I don't think the color bleeding has anything to do with mamewah
4)Sounds like a resolution issue

Have you posted these questions at www.mameworld.info?

What mccoy said for 1 & 2.

3> there is colour bleeding. An example is the snk logo. I start an mvs game, the neo geo pro gear spec screen appears, the graphics are sharp but blue extends out of the snk letters. This bleeding occurs in games too, often with red.

What sort of monitor?  Sounds like you're using a TV with composite video or a bad monitor.

In that case your v-hold probably does need to be adjusted.

Hello, thanks mccoy178 for the excellent help. I've solved all except problem 3 (colour bleeding).
The wobbling was a resolution problem. I used the avga res. tool to change them from 50+HZ TO 60HZ.
About the colour bleeding, I don't know the model of the monitor, I own jamma games and the display is excellent on all without colour bleeding. It's a 29'' super ls sound cab.
I decided to pause a game and try to adjust the pot's and the bleeding stopped without any adjusting. Pressing 'P' to pause a game removed all of the 'bleeding'. The screen was darker but the image was very sharp and I preferred the colours. When a game is running - colours are too bright.
Perhaps I could use this resolution. Any ideas?

You can adjust the brightness in your mame.ini

You can adjust brightness in your videocard settings.

You should have a pot for the monitor to adjust the brightness/voltage.

The last one is probably the best way to go. The voltage to your monitor may be a little high.

Are you using a video amp with your AVGA?  If so, stop using it.  It sounds to me like your PC is outputting a higher level video signal than your PCB's.  This will cause very bright image & bleeding, probably at the edges.

Hi, no, I'm not using a video amp. I searched in mame.ini but I couldn't find anything related to brightness.
I have a pot to control brightness - it can eliminate the bleeding but the image becomes too dark.
I changed the brightness settings in the mame32.ini file. With mame32 the bleeding has been eliminated.
Can I adjust the brightness for each game without using the pot? Final Fight was too bright with my sf2ce setting. Adjusting the pot for each game is irritating.
                                thanks

Spottydog -

Sounds to me like you may wish to check out AdvanceMame. It allows very detailed setting of the monitor refresh settings, for general resolution categories, for rom-specific choices, etc.

It's been a long time since I used it, so I can't vouch for what has happened to it lately, but I see no reason this wouldn't fix all of your issues:
