colours in space invaders
« on: March 04, 2006, 04:33:24 am »

ok, well all know that space invaders and space invaders II used a mono-chrome monitor and the colours were acheived by different coloured strips of cellophane glued on the monitor. in mame the cellophane is simulated (i dont think emulated is the correct term). two questions then:

1): why? if the developers only wanted to conserve the game and not play it, why? (i know the answer but thought i would ask it anyway)

2) is there some way of switching the colour off? or is there a version of mame that didnt have the colour added? (i run version 78)

1.  So people would know what color strips and where to put them on there monitor.

2.  I'd  use the use_overlays  setting in the ini file.  If you look in your mame folder you will probably find a file with the same name as the exe except with an ini extension.  You can edit it with notepad.  Change the 1 following use_overlays  to a 0.

cool! sounds like useful info. i dont buy the other thing though since the white isnt so 'white' on a black and white monitor. i checked on a b & w and the motherships looked very dull.

edit: ok. i see what you are getting at. it is still of historical significance to know where the colours were on the screen. and i found the overlays thing and turned it off. it works! thanks!
