Xbox and Emulators help
« on: March 01, 2006, 08:12:15 pm »
Hello,
I got a modded xbox and I play my favorite systems on it occassionally however I play off a DVD as my Harddrive is NOT upgrade. Wondered if anyone could assist me. I was able to play games off of a DVDR meaning the games/emulator are on the DVDR however I have had no luck getting the screenshots to show...can it be done when playing off the dvdr or do I need to do it via the harddrive?

In regards to the harddrive.how easy or difficult is it to load a larger drive?

I have not played mameox in  awhile and see there is now mamedox. The last I played mame on xbox some games did NOT run well...how has it improved? which games etc wont it run at playing speed?

Emulators..I play snes, nes, genesis, and mame on xbox..what else will it run?

Frontend type thing. the only downfall I see is I would like a frontend like mamewah..where I can have a nice game screen with screenshots and switch to other emulators without it seeming like i need to go into xbox menus etc...can this be done?

Just starting to ponder a new project..thought I could use the xbox instead of a pc.... If anyone has any links or advice let me know, I would greatly appreciate it.

thanks
Jim

You can emulate everything you've got, anything older, and basically any portable that isn't a DS or a PSP pretty well. You can run some Playstation and N64 games, as well.

MAME runs most older or simplistic games well, but if it's 3d, you won't have quite as much luck. Most 2d stuff should run fine, though.

The hard drive is relatively easy to do, as long as you follow a tutorial. You will also have to crack your PC open, though, to my knowledge.

If he has a modchip in his xbox, he won't need a PC at all.  It's the simplest install you could ask for.

- Take Xbox cover off
- Take out old hard drive
- Put in new hard drive
- Close Xbox

after that, you can just run Slayer's EvoX installer to get everything up and running and then customize it however you want.

Mamedox is just a more recently worked on version of mameox.

as far as "frontends" go on the xbox, the most user friendly application to load all of your emulators will probably be XBMC (Xbox Media Center).

There really isn't (to my knowledge) a "front end" for the xbox that allows you to dynamically switch between emulators like a MameWah or similar frontend does.  On the xbox, you will need to load up the individual emulator, and navigate that specific emulator's menu system in order to load your games.

XBMC will make a nice main screen to come back to however, and it is very simple to use.  You could even put the Xbox remote near your cab and load up the emulators that way before choosing your games.

Then again... there might be a FE exactly like you are looking for and I'm not aware of it, so it may be worth searching around the net to be sure.

Hey
Thanks I will look into that xbox media center...any idea where I can get it??

In regards to screenshots etc, i am sure it can show them correct? is there a website out there talking about  emulators for the xbox and their compatiability? any links to that media centre with shots and what it can do?

In regards to mamedox etc... maybe someone could give me some examples of what it will and will not play?

Arcade controls...just wondering how ppl are connecting arcade controls to xbox.. I know that there is one that connects but what if i wish to make one? the only other problem i forsee is can i connect a USB control to the xbox and play emulators? Like i want to buy one of those USB real NES controls and play nes...

thx for everything thus far!

For a good overview the forums on xbox scene has a lot of information:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php
There are individual forums for emulator and for XBMC.  Also checkout:
http://mamedox.blogspot.com/
http://www.xboxmediacenter.de/
Mamedox has dat files for use with Romcenter or Clrmamepro so you can see what games are working. You can get the emulators and XBMC from #xbins (irc) or newsgroups. Most emultors will show a screen shot.  I really like FBA-XXX Pro for arcade emulation as well.

I actually think that XBMC is a bit busy for my front end.  I used UnleashX as a dashboard to choose the different emulators.  It's nice because you can make your own skin for it if you want.  It's quite similar to mamewah, at least the older versions where you couldn't have mixed app lists.
