GREETINGS STARFIGHTER
« on: February 28, 2006, 08:26:46 pm »
GREETINGS STARFIGHTERS- DOWNLOAD IS UP AND WORKING AT:

http://www.roguesynapse.com/games/last_starfighter.php

(at the bottom download full version).

Having played this on a few machines, a brief caveat: the game uses fast texture swapping and may be a bit finicky on some graphics cards. That being said, be patient and let it run a bit and, even on older machines, it will get up to a decent speed (took a few minutes but ran well on my work PC- compaq nc6000- P M 1400MHz with 256 ram, ATI Mobility Radeon 9600). Ultimately, if performance is an issue for most, I will write in a varible resolution suroutine (Space Paranoids was originally written at 400x300x16 but Starfighter just doesn't look that good at the lower resolutions). Look forward to the feedback-

In attract mode, hit "0" to enter diagnostics/preferences. The default toggle for some of the features is off (like Death Blossom and Game continue).

Again thanks to all involved- Likely not the final version but definitely enough to build a cab around-

Doc

P.S. I am no Alex Rogan- Can't even get through the third level with 3 shields at start and no continues/no death blossom.

Interstellar! I had downloaded the "Demo" version and it looked pretty sweet. will have to load this up in the cab and give it a whirl.

Oh, I so want to see starfighter progress pics on this site.

Too bad about the base though.  I don't remember seeing a full shot of the cab in the movie though.

All I remember is, Maggie was hot, the clone in the bunk was scary, and grig laughed funny.

OK here is a photo of the game running on my Starfighter Cab. This is now the game I play to show off my cab. It has great attract sounds and the high score list is great on it. A R has the top 2 and GRG (Grig) is number 8. I get my butt kicked on the 3rd level everytime. I need to figure out how to avoid getting "lock on". It took me a second to figure out how to remap the controls, but now it works great.

I can' t beleive how accurate it is to the one in the movie.

Absolutely wonderful work Doc.

The game in the cabinet flipping rocks!!! Very cool and very happy it's working well. I myself cannot make it past the meteor level on the default settings. I always have to enable continue to get through the game in its entirety (and ususally enable Death Blossom with it). I really appreciate you posting the pic, Clangedin- that is really really cool!

Hey clanggedin, you cabinet looks great!  What are those holders that you are using for the Act Lab's guns and where can I get them?

There was a guy on the boards a year ago that had a bunch of these for sale. I believe I paid $5 each for them. I bet if you did a search you'd find the thread.

Yeah, I found the thread.  It looks like they are barcode reader holders.  Do they have some sort of brand name or part number on them?  Maybe I can find them on the web.  They seem to work great for the guns.

Just a heads up, the newest version of STARFIGHTER is available for download. New features include:

7-6 1-0 Fixed lighting glitch on Logo Demo
7-6 1-1 Fixed Music Single play (have to reload each time)
7-6 1-1 Made Attract sounds less frequent/added timer
7-6 1-2 Added toggle for soundefx during attract
7-6 1-3 Adding mousefire and mame weapon toggle
7-6 1-4 Death Blossom occasional malfunction
   7-6 1-5 Pts 1-7 Integrating Variable Resolutions
7-6 1-6 Finished variable res/Intro shows in attract occasionally
   7-6 1-7 New Centauri logo
   7-6 1-8 Joystick incorporation
7-6 1-9 Fixed missile glitch in Death Blossom
   7-6 2-0 Variable Turret Speeds
7-6 2-1 Variable Turret Speeds- Diagnostic mode variable

   7-6 2-1 DOWNLOAD VERSION 5-1-6

There is limited joystick support but there are several freeware keymappers listed in the readme that should allow mapping to any peripheral. Also look for a fixed "Bishop of Battle" teaser and a teaser for "The War of the Worlds" arcade redeux (should be up in the next few days).

As always, www.roguesynapse.com for the downloads.

You know, I gotta tell you. You have done a scary job. Bishop of battle haunted me for years when I was a kid. I totally forgot about it. Yesterday, I was on the site and the face appeared and then the screen shots started I had this wonderful feeling of panic and dread. Total a kickback to my youth. I am looking forward to playing it. (I just don't wanna get sucked in). Space paranoids was another one. I was trying to do it on a keyboard as my cab is not done yet. Just the sounds put you on edge. My brother is gonna $#!+ when he sees starfighter. We grew up saying ghaw, I wish that it was a real game. Why can't they make that game...". The fact that it starts the same and sounds the same... Awesome. I am not going to tell him. I am just going to set it up the next time he is here and leave the house. He'll hear from the game room..."Attention Starfighters" He'll freak!

Build it and they will come, destroy it and they will come to watch. That's a win/win situation!
