hiscore
« on: February 27, 2006, 01:07:47 am »
Alright I have taxed my brain on this! I am sure it is something very simple I am overlooking. I downloaded the hiscore program and I put it in my mame folder, then I extracted them there also. I extracted into the mame folder, not a subfolder within mame. I looked at the docs and saw that Donkey Kong in fact is on there but I can not get it to save my high score! Does it have anything to do with what version of MAME I am running? I am running 103 and my FE is Mamewah.
Do I need to change anything in the ini? Any suggestions?

Okay just to make sure I am looking at the right thing. I would expect that the high score would be kept on the high score page of the game itself. You know when you get the high score you input your 3 letters. If the hiscore program does not save it to that I am looking in the wrong place!

Okay I searched around a bit and found a thread about changing the mame ini file. I looked in mine and it says hiscore_directory     hi

BUT there is no hiscore_file    hiscore.dat

I read on the other thread that it was supposed to say that. Should I insert that line right underneath hiscore_directory?

OR am I on the wrong track?
I am not really computer savvy so this is all a learning experience for me and I don't want to muck something up.
Thanks

just as a FYI, hi-scores in many of the original games were kept in RAM. when the machine was turned off, the scores dissappeared. what the hi score file in mame does (more or less) is record your high score and store it. when you play the game again, it re-inserts that hi score back.

allright...I didn't get it going last night, I didn't sleep well because of it! :(
I have a question....where exactly is the extracted file going to go? I know it says the mame directory but just for the record what is that? I have a folder on my drive called mame, in that folder are several other folders (samples, snap, titles......) there are also things that are not folders, like if you click on them they don't open to more stuff (chdman, mame, romcomp....) there is a file in there that is my ini it has a litle notepad and a sprocket it says configuration settings. So now I don't know where to put the hiscore dat. I put it in the "mame" folder and it appears as a file folder in there. I know I am doing something wrong, I just don't know whatit is.

Poor guy! Lets see if I can help.....

download hiscore.dat
put it in the root of your mame folder
make sure you have a hi folder
make sure mame.ini points to the hi folder for highscores

Then pick a game and check it out. Be warned, games that are using a cheat will not save a hiscore. I ran into a problem testing my setup out while using the sped up version of ms. pacman. It never saves a hiscore - but almost all the rest of the games work.

Good luck - message me if I can help any further.

Just to clarify the above post. Assume your drive is c:\ Then your structure will look something like this:

C:\Mame\
              \Roms\
              \Snap\
              \Icons\
              \Cabinets\

You get the picture, if you don't then turn your PC off and go to bed  ;D

In your C:\Mame\ folder there should be a file called hiscore.dat

This does NOT live in a folder of it's own, only in the root Mame dir as above.

If I wasn't at work I'd screenshot it so you could understand.

This does NOT live in a folder of it's own, only in the root Mame dir

That is what it took! Everytime I would try to extract it, it would make its own folder with the .dat file and the text file. SO I took the .dat file out and put it in the MAME folder and it works! Watch out husband I am going to beat your high score but!!! AND it will be there as proof!!! HEE HEE!!! ;D
Thanks Brad for your help. Like I said I don't know how to work with computers but if someone tells me step by step I can do it!

No problem. I suspect you were using WinRar or similiar to extract it and using the default of extracting to a folder  the same name as the file.

I wish my wife would complete on my arcade cab. Mind you we DO complete on the PC playing Bejewel Deluxe 2. Well I stopped, she keeps kicking my arse and increasing here score whereas I seemed to have hit my threshold LOL!
