Disturbed
« on: February 26, 2006, 03:34:10 pm »
Ive been disturbed latley about the whole mainstreaming and trendiness of the word geek. See back in school I was picked on and humiliated for being a "computer nerd" now I have some of those same people that called me all those names and harrassed me asking me for "myspace html code" and "how do I use these emulators" well mabye they should have learned it instead of making fun of us. They should go back to burning themselves to a crisp at the beach and spending 12 hrs at the mall buying everything trendy in sight. So now that it's the thing to be smart now people that thought it was a dorky thing wanna be "Geeks"  WTF

I have spoken amen

Actually, I get it and it ticks me off too.  The same people that would have pushed a "geek" into a locker now would call you up and ask you to help them with crap they should have learned to do themselves.  I'm probably one of the few people that is still offended when called a geek.

The reasoning behind this spaz is because I help keep the servers up at a net cafe. And I sit next to this couple and they have on t-shirts that say "geek boy" and "geek girl". And the guy asks whats a harddrive. Now stop me if I'm wrong but 99% of geeks know this without even having a true thought process. So I say "with those shirts I figured youd know that" the girl says "everyone at school is wearing these so we just kinda played along" need I say what I was thinking.

On the subject of being a 'Geek'.

It's nice to be valued instead of villified, without actually changing anything about myself. Also, there is this thing called growing up, when people may realize that there is value in our differences.

I know how to properly lift heavy furniture, but I still need to call a "Jock" if I actually want it to happen. It's cool though, I set up his home wireless network.  ;D

Why are you upset?  Since it bugged you so much about being made fun of and being the butt of everyone's jokes when you were younger, then this should be nirvana for you - THEY are the butt of the joke now, and you can screw with THEM!  Tell them everything they want to know....with a twist.

Tool: What's a hard drive?
You:  That's what the CD drive has to plug into to be able to burn a CD.
Tool:  But I thought that a CD Drive worked all by itself
You:  Yeah, a lot of folks mistakenly think that.  You should see what some folks think a mobo is!
Tool:  What's a mobo?
You:  It's where those cards plug into to work, like your modem
Tool:  That whole thing?
You:  No, just the area with those little plug-in strips
Tool:  Cool!
You:  Just be sure not to go telling all those people who don't have a clue.

Easiest way to get them to blab to all THEIR uneducated friends and look like an ass eventually, at which point they realize THEY'VE been geek-punk'd

Or you could just charge exorbitant rates because you have the knowledge they wish they'd have gained while laying out at the beach.

I don't say this often, but Drew Karee is right.  Its your turn to screw with them.

Luckily I never had any "bully" problems in highschool.  I consider myself a redneck geek.  I own a big ass truck that I rebuilt myself in highschool.  I like both cars and computers.  I played football in highschool while going to computer science classes.  I took both wood shop and calculus.  Unforunately this meant I didn't fit in with either the jocks or the geeks and never made any true friends in highschool, but didn't have any enemies either.  (well one, but that was a family feud type thing.  He was 2 years older then me, but I was in pretty good with the varsity defensive line so he never really tried to start anything)

 :P

who really cares... the "geek" trend is only based around people who wish to hide their stupidity, but they fail at it miserably.  If you wear a Zelda shirt, but think the "dude with the sword is Zelda" you'll always be an idiot.... "geek wear" or not.
first off your and idiot

Not a few within my family, a feud of my family with another family.  Basically they bought the land behind ours, which was very beautiful land where deer and other wildlife used to live.  They then bulldozed it so they could build a house there.  We found out they didn't have the right permits to do that, called the city on them.  They eventually got the right permits, then someone poured sand into the gas tank of all their constuction vehicles (it wasn't us, but they thought it was) which slowed them down.  Then, just as they were going to pour the foundation, an underground spring popped up right in the middle of the area. underground spring means non-secure ground, which means they were no longer allowed to build there.  We actually had a number of things lined up to stop them, but luckily mother nature brought her rath down upon them.  One of the other things we had was proof of an endagered species living there (I believe it was the kangaroo mouse), but bringing that up would cause all sorts of problems, so it was a last resort.  Lots of other stuff happened between our families during that time, but thats the main bullet points.

But anyways.....what were we talking about?  How we hate nerds or something right?

See, I don't want to mess with them.  I don't care what they do so long as I don't have to deal with them at all.  They bugged me when I was "the smart one to make fun of" and now that we're older they bug me when I'm "the smart one who actually got an education and has a strong career and makes money and has smart kids".  Don't come back asking me for crap, I'm not going to help them or charge them money or anything.  I'm going to tell them to go back to wherever they came from.  I never had the "the big bad jocks are beating on me" problem because I was physically one of them.  I don't need to call anyone to lift furniture.  People call me to move their piano.

I think most of my issue with stuff like that is with the particular people I have to deal with.  I get the people who want me to fix their "just got the damn thing PC, the warranty people won't fix it" and they get pissed when I won't drive 50 miles to do it.  I tell them to bring it to me... then their "just got it" PC is 5 years old and looks like they stored it in the septic tank.  "no, we've never opened it" has resulted in finding a case with cheetos in it.  I would spend a whole weekend rebuilding, upgrading the OS, finding all the best drivers and fully testing, installing hundreds of dollars of updated software they didn't have, and then a week later get the "you said you fixed it but you didn't" call after they plugged it into an HIV infested network.

I've found over the years that people can't afford to pay what would make fixing their PC worth it to me.  Don't EVER go to troubleshoot someone's home network... been there, done that, it would be better to go make peace in Iraq.

The guy in the costume is a dork

Geek/Nerd/Jock/Preppy/Goth...etc....sticks and stones....gotta get over it, or you will never get over it...there will always be someone looking to stick it to you....boss,neighbor,your government, someone else's government...there is always someone out there ready to judge/treat you unfairly.  The only true way to win, is truly not let it bother you (easier said than done)

The opposite of love isn't hate, it is indifference...........guess we weren't talking about "love", but you know what I mean  8)

When you can treat the people that treated/judged you unfairly, just like everyone else that you don't "hate because of what they did to you", then you win...until then, you are a victim, even if you are turning the tables on them,

Am I as philosiphical as fredster yet?

What I'd like to know is why the F are you still in touch with idiots from high-school Chad??

Geeks and Nerds are not the same thing. The definition of "geek" is anyone who's unusually "into" something. It's not just computers. For example, you could know nothing about computers yet still be a "movie geek".

As for losers from the past calling ya up. That's when the saying "GFY" comes handy.

I am personally not in touch with ANYONE from high school. Most of em are still losers, who never have experienced life beyond the borders of the sucky little town they grew up in. And those who aren't losers, what do i care to stay in touch with em for? High school sucked, so why bring back the memories.

"Run away" is my motto. When I got old enough, I got the hell out of that hell-hole of a "city". Go where opportunities lie. I never understood people just settling for the status quo.

My 7 year old son goes to school with the children of kids that made fun of me in high school. Their kids come over to my house and play my arcade games.

I got a call from one of my high school bullies wanting to get together and hang out, just because his kid came over and played games at my house. Our kids have played soccer together for a 2 years now and I see him at the games, where he's never said one word to me (like I cared, anyway). Then when he finds out about my hobby, he calls me and wants to be my best friend.

If it makes you feel any better, it's wasn't your brains those people were making fun of.

You may have shed some of the geekness that caused you to get pushed in a locker, that's why they talk to you now.

The guy I used to bully around is now one of my best friends.  Not because he's a genius, but because he's no longer a geek.
