ELO ETC170K-8SWA-1-DH Cap Kit?
« on: February 26, 2006, 12:21:19 pm »
So I picked up an ELO 17" Kiosk Screen off of E-bay for a decent price.

The monitor works great.   The only issue is, that even with brightness and contrast at full settings, the monitor is frankly dim and not bright enough for my likings compared to my other 17" ELO.

I'm naive in the realm of monitors, but am fully willing to learn.

Is it possible to put a new CAP kit on this and would it be worth it?

Should I look for something inside the monitor housing that would allow me to increase the brightness?

Any additional info that's needed, just say the word and I'll do my best to get any and all questions answered.

A friend of mine has two ELO touchscreen monitors used in his tavern for the PullTabs program. They both have gone bad and he wants me to look at them. I understand that ELO used several different monitor manufacturers as the base monitor with an ELO touchscreen attached. I think I will be going there tomorrow evening to pick them up.

you can find extra controls for foreground and background colours on nearly all types of monitors, usually they are small adjustable pots on the tube neck card(some earlier type monitors have these controls on the main chassis and some may have an remote board with these adjustments such as nanao).
if its just a brightness issue then you will find the screen volts adjustment situated next to the focus pot on the lopti/flyback transformer.
if your monitor is digital(if you have a menu to access) then you usually find all these adjustments here such as red bias  etc.
i am not familiar with elotec monitors but in my experience every monitor is practically the same just bits in different places.

WARNING: Large Pictures.....

The monitor itself is actually a Hyundai HL-7870a.

On the top there appear to be 4 dials that don't really do anything when adjusting them.  See the first picture below.

If I were a betting man, I'd say the tabs on the neck can be adjusted, but I'm not, and I'm out of school here, so I'll leave it up to you experts.

dont adjust those pots on the neck(scan coils),looks like a pc monitor i.e digital.i cant see any pots on your pics unless they situated at the front of the chassis under the the tube.how at present do adjust contrast and brightness,is it with buttons on the front?

Yes, buttons are accessed through the bottom of the chassis....facing forward...full digital menu...brightness and contrast are both already set to 100%

this is a shot in the dark, when you power up your monitor hold down the menu button whilst you switch on,this is to see if you can access an extended menu,if no luck try adjusting up your screen volts that is the pot next to the focus on the lopti(the large black plastic object on the rear left hand side of the chassis)otherwise you might have to remove the monitor from the frame to see if any pots are hiding anywhere.

No luck on the power on and hold down the menu button deal.

Not only do I have brightness/contrast to 100%, but I have moved Red and Blue Colors to 255.  Green won't let me move it, it says "Fix" on the screen.

Also, the menu comes up as "User Mode"  so it's a good bet that there is an extended mode of some sort.

So if i'm looking at the pots in the below picture, which one is focus, which one is voltage?

It seems I have moved the focus by accident, now everything is blurry... :(

sorry to inform you that you just adjusted the purity rings, not a good thing to do-you need to get them back to the original place, you should find a paint line that lines up those rings, dont worry too much just get them back correct or your picture will never be correct.the pot you are looking for is on the main chassis, the lopti is the black plastic unit inside the metal enclosure with a thick red lead that goes to to tube, this is the ht lead there is probably 20,000 volts on this so please dont touch this lead(when i mean dont touch i refer to you unplugging it).obviously i am not aware of your experience on monitors but there are things you must never adjust, purity rings and preset voltages are two.

Doh!  Well crap...ok...let me see if I can get these things adjusted back at least....if I can get the picture back I'll live with the dim picture until I can find someone local who can take a closer look.

Anybody in Michigan with experience willing to take a look for a few dollars and a twelve pack???

Nice...i'm an idiot..I admit it...i just snapped one of those tabs off...sheesh.

Just the little plastic tab mind you...everything else is still intact...and movable.

I just need to get it adjusted back...which is proving to be quite the challenge.

Next question:

I have a second touchscreen/ELO that is the same size 17."

Think it's possible to take it, and put it inside this kiosk case?

the very rear black ring is a lock ring when you turn that it unlocks the other rings so you can move them more easily, mark the ones you have not moved yet with a bit of pen so if they move you can put them back

LOL, I don't consider you rude at all.  You're absolutely right.  I admit it, working inside a monitor is NOT my strong point.  I'll find someone around here that does have those skills that's near by, or that's willing to let me ship the damn thing to them for repair.

do not be downhearted you have only put some adjustments out so someone with only a little experience will be able to rectify your situation very quickly ;),you have not damaged your monitor in anyway and i did exactly the same thing as a trainee-we all have to start somewhere.at least you did not forget to reconnect the ht lead like i did once, resulting in my instructor flying across the room with 30000 volts through him quickly followed by me flying across the room courtesy of an electrocuted instructor :o
