What to do with this LED display junk?
« on: February 23, 2006, 09:36:14 am »
I've got 10 led ticker display units sitting here ready for the garbage. They're 3" tall and about 48" wide. I'm not sure what drives them, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
I'm hesitant to throw them out since they're in really good condition, but what the hell would I use them for?

Maybe I should just throw them on eBay...

What kind of inputs?

Looks like parallel port. I'll post some photos.
Are you thinking "Hmmmm.... just what my kids room needs!" ?
I need to ask one of the old guys here how they were used.

Dude, if you think they still work, I'll totally take a couple.  The new all in one replacement board for the Sinbad we picked up supports external LED displays.

If I can't get that to work, maybe i'll just put it in my car and vent road rage on everyone who cuts me off.   ;D

Awesome.  Let me know as this progresses, I am definitely down for a couple if you're willing.  I can come pick them up and bring beer.  That may be workable with the Sinbad and if not I'm sure I can find other uses in the basement finishing we've been talking about.

With all 10 you could do a ticker display around your house, letting all your neighbours know that you're close to the edge and have unlocked the fire-arms safe.

Hey JoyMonkey, what model are they?  I can't quite make it out on the sticker on the back...

Heh... I think I could find cool uses for two of them.  Let me know.

They're Sunrise Systems EMX 2000/3 units (the 3 means they display 3" letters). I've already emailed the manufacturer to see if I can get some docs out of them.

Need some sort of software to drive it too.  That would be the most important thing to have.

It looks like parallel, but it could be 25-pin serial. My guess is that the male plug on the back allows daisy-chaining.

Don't pitch the things until you get a manual. I'd like to see how they are programmed.

It would be fun to have something like a "Now Playing" display for a home jukebox. Lots of possibilities there.

I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

Please read the wiki!
