Authorities Say Driver Fled Scene After Crashing Speeding Ferrari
Sheriff Says Car Could Have Been Going Up To 200 MPH

MALIBU, Calif. -- A speeding Ferrari crashed Tuesday on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, prompting the closure of the roadway and a search for the driver, authorities said.

Paramedics were sent to PCH at Decker Road at about 6:15 a.m., said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Ron Haralson. One person suffered a minor injury and was treated at the scene.

One lane was reopened in each direction at about 8:35 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Francisco Villalobos. The second southbound lane was reopened about a half hour later.

The badly damaged vehicle -- reportedly a Ferrari Enzo worth between $600,000 and $1 million -- has a top speed of more than 200 mph.

Sheriff's Sgt. Philip Brooks said the passenger suffered only a minor injury, and the driver was apparently unharmed.

"We have the passenger, who told us the driver did flee from the scene," Brooks said. "And we ... followed some footprints up the side of the hill in an effort to locate the driver."

Authorities believe the Ferrari "was traveling at least 100 mph and it will probably be a lot more than that once we conclude our investigation," Brooks said.

The impact sheared the car in half, with the entire front section separated from the rest of the vehicle.

"For a million dollars, you get a very good passenger-safety system, and apparently in this case it did work," Brooks said.

The driver remained at large more than three hours after the crash. Because of the injury to the passenger, the motorist could face a felony hit-and-run charge, Brooks said.

Some electrical service was interrupted in the area because the car struck a power pole.

Those Enzos are dropping like flies... that is at least the 4th or 5th one I've read about being destoryed.

So much for Ferrari's "screeing" of potential buyers.  It's a shame too, they are stunning and should be taken care of, not driven on the freeway at 150mph by retards.

Priorities... the pins were getting flooded and you need to get there ASAP to limit the damage.

I wish I could find the one set of pictures of the guy that let off the throttle of his Enzo on a slight turn and completely blew the thing to pieces.  It was in at least 3 major pieces with hundreds of pieces scattered all over... I can't find them again though.

It was from another country, forget where.  But you coudl see in the pictures how caught some oversteer and careened right into a wall of ivy.

Not pretty.

If you hit the water at 200mph you'll get far enough before it stops moving.

Talking about Swampers, I mean come on, you can only drive what is available on hand.  Why not just say he should have driven Gravedigger in there?

No you wouldn't... not at all.  You'd barely move.

Hey.. the guy has a damn Ferrari and a warehouse full of pins...  how far of a stretch is some kind of Jeep/truck with large tires?  Not very if you ask me.  I'm not talking a monster truck here.. .just a simple lift kit and some large tires.  I doubt he hauls many pins in that Ferrari.   ::)

I'm sure you'd hydroplane for quite some distance before you stopped

Keep in mind that I don't care about the truck or the Ferrari, I just want to see what happens when you drive a Ferarri into water at 200mph.

Not at the depth of water in that picture.  Sure.. at 200mph, you hit a nice patch of water and you're going for a ride... however if you're talking about the depth of that picture, you're going to do one of a few things:

1) If its a gradual depth increase, you are gonna slow down pretty quickly but move a decent distance... nothing to really write home about.  You'll hydroplane for as long as the water stays high enough to drift, but low enough not to interfere with your momentum.
2) Sharper depth changes will either sumberge the front end and bring you to a FAST stop, and likely flood the engine depending again on depth.
3) The car will lift INTO the water (likely since the car is light) and the wheels will lose contact with the ground.  Now you aren't going 200mph on land anymore... you're dispersing all your forward momentum and inertia through all that water... and you will slow down quickly yet again.

I wouldn't mind seeing a car slam into water at 200mph.. but not a Ferrari.

There is actually a gaming tie in with the original story in this thread.

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,18235227-23109,00.html

The owner of the Ferrari Enzo that was destroyed on PCH happens to be the head of the European division of Gizmondo, who declared bankruptcy on Jan. 20

Apparantly this guy and the entire company were into some pretty shady deals... A pretty amazing story; reminisient of the dot-com craze:

http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/02/04/fast_cars/

Crazy stuff...!

Edit -  Some great pix of the crash site: http://www.jalopnik.com/cars/news/more-on-the-enzo-incident-on-pch-with-photos-156121.php

yes, a Cheetah would have been just the ticket. less of those around than enzos though... so a not very large leap of the imagination would be one of those lil porsche 4wds, what are they called? cayennes or something. or one of those awful, awful bmw 4wds. maybe not the bmw, since there is some sort of built-in aversion to anything remotely off-road...

My aunt has an X3 and I make fun of it constantly.  It is NOT a truck... its just a slightly taller car.  It's a total joke.  She's in real estate, so I went with her to see a piece of land once, and it almost got stuck in a muddy patch of ground.... maybe 6 or 8 inches of muddy water.
