Project Arcade Cabinet Done! Updates 06/17/07
« on: February 18, 2006, 07:04:33 pm »
The Control Panel consists of the following:
  • 2 X-Arcade Joysticks
    16 Black X-Arcade Buttons
    1 X-Arcade Player 1 Button
    1 X-Arcade Player 2 Button
    2 White X-Arcade Buttons
3 Red Happ Buttons w/ Cherry Microswitches
1 Red Happ Translucent Illuminated Trackball
    1 SlikStik Tornado Spinner
    X-Arcade Keyboard Encoder

The cabinet was basically desinged using the Project Arcade plans from Saint's book.  My only major modification was the addition of a keyboard tray.

The display is a 27" Mitsubishi TV powered by a Radeon 9500 Pro via S-Video.

Future Additions:
  • Act Lab's TV Light Gun (On the way)
Happ Top Fire Joystick (On the way to replace Player 2 Joystick)
    Ultimarc Mag-Stick Plus (Not yet)

I like how it stands out almost saying "Play Me"

What is that thing to the left of the cabinet?  There are hanging glasses and glass people under the glasses. ???

Thanks.  I have to say that my favorite and most played light gun game is House of the Dead.  I picked it up for like $4.99 at Fry's and it plays great with dual light guns.  You will need to download "The Troubleshooter" patch however.

Right now I do not have any fancy graphics on the control panel.  I am using the standard black marble.  I plan to switch to something new soon, but I haven't found anyting I like yet.  I have attached some pictures, but some are before the joystick upgrades.

If you really want to change things up it might be a good idea to jump over to the artwork forum and ask for some suggestions and such.

That is if you still want to put some time and effort into the art.

I like the yellow too. My cabinets are all black and ominous. Yours is so inviting. I'm rehabbing a Hyper Sports so I'm looking forward to painting it yellow and white. It will really stand out with all the black.

Thanks.  The yellow I used is called "Blaze Yellow".  It is from Sears from their Hot Wheels selection.  I liked it because it was a darker yellow.  I really goes good with the black T-Molding.

Hey Chicago Dave:
How does the picture look using the Radeon video card via s-video going into the tv? Where did you get the video card since I'm looking for the same results.
thanks
Dave

The S-Video output from the 9500 Pro is great.  It looked a lot better than I expected.  The card used to be the graphics card in my main computer.  I picked it up a few years ago.  It looks like the same card is selling on ebay now for less than $40.

Actually the thing that made the picture look the best was the Smoked Glass.  The greylite 14 really improved things.  It was well worth the money.

Awesome job man!

Am I mistaken or did you add cupholders to the sides?

Some of these guys may balk at that, but I think it's a great idea!

Thanks.  Yes those are drink holders.  I got sick of people trying to balance their drink on the control panel.  They actually work pretty well.  I use the one on right as a holster for the Act Labs guns.

Good idea!

I was thinking of putting the drink holders up a bit higher, then run a hose/straw down to the mouth like the old beer hat idea. Then I figured it would be easer to just run an IV plugged directly into my arm...

Some updates:

1) Repaced the infamous "black marble" control panel overlay with the flame overlay from www.mamemarquees.com
2) Added a dedicated 4-way joystick (J-Stick from Ultimarc)
