Where does one find good torrents?
« on: February 18, 2006, 05:49:56 pm »
I've used Emule for a long time and I really love it, but Emule is great for it's quality, not for its speed.  Another nice thing about Emule is that it's completely searchable.

But for Bittorrent, one needs torrents.  Where do y'all find them.  I need some software (Silverfast for a UMAX scanner) that originally shipped with a scanner that I have, but I can't find the disc and the company wants....and I'm not kidding here....$400 for a replacement disc.  I don't feel the least bit bad about Bittorenting a copy of software that I already own a legal license for.  But I can't find a torrent for it on the torrent search engines I found through Google.

Any suggestions?

I'm afraid.  It costs $10 to sign up for bittorent.com.  I'd be fine with that if I knew I could get what I need, but ain't paying $10 just to find out if they have what I need.

Torrent sites are somewhat fleeting.  When one I'm using goes away I just use google to find a new one.

This has been my experience as well.  Unfortunately I've also found that older more obscure software is difficult to come by through torrents.

I use ---No torrents please - thanks!---.org, but it's a lot of music and warez, I doubt you'd find a specialized software package like that.

does emule have any kind of hits at all?  i typed in silverfast, and got 277 of 'em.  obviously i'm not sure which is which, but what emule server do you connect to?

razorback has the most files that i know of
195.245.244.243:4661
frankly, it's the only one i EVER connect with.

i assume you already use razorback, but i figure i'd try and help if i could.

i wonder if bittorrent's gonna be the next target of all the p2p program haters like the riaa, etc?  seems like it's gaining in popularity.

emule seems to somehow stay off the radar all this time.

BitTorrent SITES have already come under fire from the RIAA/MPAA/etc.  So far, the technology itself has not been attacked, mostly because it is just a platform for distribution.  That argument was also used for Kazaa/Morpheus/etc, but the difference with BitTorrent is there actually seems to be a good amount of legitimate venues using it.  Content is distributed, software, linux, video, etc etc... all perfectly legal to download.

The problem comes in when someone makes FreeStolenGameTorrents.com or something like that where the sole intention is to distribute stolen goods.  But even then.. so far, the authorities have only gone after the owners of the site who are distributing the illegal torrent files.... not the BitTorrent program itself (at least not as much as the site).

Word is Opera will be integrating a bit torrent frontend into its next version, which means it probably won't be long before Mozilla does the same.  Unfortunately IE never seems to get updated so it probably won't.  I just figured I'd point out how legitimate bit torrent is.

Try www.isohunt.com

It's got popups and trash, but it searches a bunch of torrent sites and displays the results.

I think I'd still prefer to have a sepearte torrent program though... that's just me though.

Silverfast is the program that actually controls the scanner.  It allows for ICC profiling of the scanner as well as color and sharpening corrections at 36bits prior to the conversion to 24bit RGB images in Photoshop.

LOL.  That's what I was thinking.

ICC profiling: http://www.ddisoftware.com/prism/about.htm
-> Color accuracy <-

36 bit scanning (and 48 bit): http://www.scantips.com/basics14.html
-> 24 bit color is three 8-bit bytes, one byte for each of the Red, Green, and Blue CCD channels, to describe the color of each pixel in the image. 30 bit color uses 10 bits for each of the three primary RGB colors... <-

As far as Emule goes, I got lots of hits, but at the rate any of them are coming in you should check back some time near the end of March to see if I have it.

Emule/Ed2k Is a joke unless you KNOW the releases and release groups... Since ShareReactor went down, ED2k has gone downhill period..

Tip, Dont use search thats built in unless you know exact filenames and sizes.

I have the same scanner at home. I'll see if I can find the CD. Unfortunatley I have been packing for the move and I did pack the scanner, but I'm pretty sure the software is still in a binder unpacked.

I'll let ya know in a couple of hours.

On Emule, I still find at least 90% of what I download to be exactly what I wanted and virus free.  It was 1000x cooler when ShareReactor was around, but it still turns up 277 Silverfast hits for a myriad of scanners while BitTorrent is 100% silent on the subject, regardless of what torrent search site I use.

I checked all public and private sources i know of, i didnt find a single damn torrent..

Yeah....I'm prayin' that Goz comes through cos I'm getting like 92 bps on my Silverfast downloads from Emule and who knows if it'll turn out to be compatible with my scanner.  And yes....that's bps, not kbps   :'(

I've been meaning for a long time to figure out what newsgroups were all about.  Like, for about the last ten years.  I just never get around to it.  And I've only ever used IRC to open Xbins up to get XBMC releases and periodically other Xbox stuff.  So basically I don't even know where to begin, and I guess probably won't unless I get bad news from Goz.
