Does anyone own a Super Chexx Dome Hockey machine? I want one (they are about $3K) and was curious if people found them hard to maintain, break often etc? Any reviews/testimony for or against is greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine just bought a used one. It had the hell beaten out of it over the years, but it still worked. They are pretty solid machines, and one can still find the old USA vs USSR machines still on location.

Over the years, gears can strip (there are little gear boxes under the players) but the entire machine is a breeze to tear apart and put back together. My friend did so without ANY experience in coin op equipment. Replaced all of the gears and dome with minimal effort.

My buddy ended up hand painting the guys to look like Minnesota Wild players in their home and away jerseys and putting a Wild logo center ice. Looks pretty slick.

Those games consistently sell for over a grand. The most expensive part is the dome. Once that cracks, you're pretty much SOL on replacing it cheaply.

I bought mine from a dealer in Tampa. Shipped to NJ it was less than $2500. about 6 years ago.

I had to replace all of my gear boxes, as my production run had problems.

I've had no maintenance problems. My kids do pullups on the bars sometimes. I heard they can bend in half and go back to straight.

I don't LET my kids do that, but I can't catch them all the time.

I think I remember reading that it was designed to be bent in half.

I bought mine new because the search for used games always lead to games that had the shizzle beat out of them.

This was the game that I played at the Jersey Shore for years, and I wanted it to be perfect. At the time, games were going for $1000-$1500 used, so I considered the extra $1000 worth it to get a new one.

I used to have one of these, sans dome, when I was a kid. It was a table top version with just hard plastic, thin guys, but it was still fun.

Anyone know if they still make them at all? Might be a fun thing to grab for WAY WAY less then a few grand.

They still make them. Stiga makes the best one, sells for around $100, maybe a lil more, but you can pick up a cheap one for $30ish from ToysRus

IIRC, there's one board inside, with a ribbon cable that runs up to the scoring unit.

That plastic dome is pricey.

The gear boxes that the men spin on are pricey.

The base is one piece too. Perhaps that's expensive to make?

AND, aren't electronics cheap? REAL stuff isn't?

2 years ago at xmas from Costco for like 250? Every party or when people come over it is the hit of the party. Only reason I need one with a dome because my daughter is now right at eye level or a bit above the table and without the dome, the pucks go out of play hard and often. First game we played xmas morning, I took a puck to the throat and one under the eye within the first 2 minutes. The game is very fun, but like I said, with young kids, I need a dome. Went to Tap Plastics to see if they could fabricate one, they said 800 bucks because they would have to shop it out to someone who would do a 1 off. I'm going to be selling it for 150 real soon.

I had a piece of old plexi that I laid over the top. It worked until the puck got jammed behind the net or in one of the dead spots where the players cannot get to it. Plus it would need to be secured on there because while playing the game, there is a ton of movement and the damn thing wanted to fall off all the time. If it was only adults, no problem, but like I said I have kids and with my luck I'd tag one of them in the eye. We hate to get rid of it, but the garagecade will have an empty space reserved for a Chexx when the time comes.

Maybe some good ol' Velcro...

That would probably hold it down good enough,
and would be easy to lift up for a stuck puck.

You could run that until the Super Chexx comes in

That 2005 Special Edition Super Chexx looks nice!

I actually owned a Premium Bubble Hockey. It actually plays really well and is very close to the super chexx. The only down fall is the dome is not quite tall enough. You have to hunch over when you play to see past the score board. I modded my score board with a longer cable and hung it over the machine. It was kinda cool that way.

Sadly I had to sell it for space last year and I got more than I had paid for it initially. I recommend these as long as you can live with the dome. I recommend fing a local billiard/gamroom store and checking them out in person first. Another thing is that Carrom is really good about sending out replacement parts if necessary. I had to replace a goal sensor as it would register by bumping the game. They sent it out right away with no problems.

I ended up selling my old table with no dome 2 months or so ago on Craigslist for 150. Just the other day on Craigslist someone posts a Chexx for 250, but it is a project. I call and talk with the guy for a bit, he knows I will keep it and not sell it, he delivers it to my house the other day

Like I said, it needs a ton of work, but in the end when it is all finished, it will be well worth it.

Edit - Apparently I have a rare version, a Japanese one, according to marvin3M's website. W00T!

I have this Japanese version as well, but am not to sure that it is a good thing yet. It seems there is no way to change the period length...have you found a way? The lights are nice (at the goals). I just got it last week and am figuring out ways to make it work better. Some of the guys still swing over the puck.

My wife got me the Costco one for Christmas a few years ago too. It was built really well and was a ton of fun. Unfortunately, we just didn't play it enough as my kids are very young and my wife is very lame (game-wise). We ended up taking it back to Costco and getting a full refund on it like a year after buying it. Costco's return policy is pretty sweet.
