Is "Neo Geo" and "Neo Geo Pocket" the same thing?
« on: February 11, 2006, 09:54:02 pm »
I am trying to determine how to set up MameWah and was wondering whether there are three "Neo Geo" Rom sets (ie: Neo Geo, Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo CD)  OR whether there are just two (ie: Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo CD) only?

Isn't Neo Geo sort for the Neo Geo MVS/AES set, Neo Geo Pocket was a portable system whose games are not really worth having on an arcade machine (in my opinion) and Neo Geo CD is a different versions of the MVS/AES set with i think 2 more games as well as higher qualit graphics/music possibly?  The CD set takes up a LOT of space though, as the files are all bin/cue or mp3/ISO format.

Like sc1103 said. There was also NGPocket Color, which SHOULD run on most NGPocket emulators (though I recall at least one case where that wasn't true)

I owned an NGPocket color, and frankly it was the best, THE BEST! pocket system ever. There weren't many games for it, but most of them were extremely well done and very fun to play. I DO have an NGP emulator on my cab because the games translate very well to a cab system... even with the graphics blown up way above what they were originally intended for.

I use NeoPop-win32 for NGPC. Works absolutely great with mamewah.

I didn't touch it....honest!

MVS/AES set with i think 2 more games as well as higher qualit graphics/music possibly?

Not at all.... the cd versions are the same games.  The thing is 100 meg+ rom chips were very expensive at the time (still are) so some popular games on the home system were released in cd form to help with the cost.  If they weren't on cds then you'd literally be paying as much for the home version as you would for the arcade cart.

I assumed that the graphics would be the biggest drawback; however, my friend has a NGP color, and samurai showdown II and the capcom vs snk card game are both very well done.

I understood the cost issues; however, it is true that several games were released exclusively for the Neo Geo CD.  Off the top of my head I know that Iron Clad and Samurai Showdown RPG were released exclusively for the CD.  But yes, the CD originated as a cheap solution to the hundreds of dollars an AES did, and still does, cost-the biggest barrier for me to pick one up  >:(
