Is there a dreamcast emulator for the pc or xbox?

what is Chankast emu?

Chankast is the DC emu for PC..

There WAS a xbox one in the works, but i think it was scrubed.. they had one DC game running at like 1/8th speed or something.. i forget..

There was one in the works from the chankast people, it ran 1 game at low speed, and wasent fully optimized..

It wouldnt ever get 100% speed, but i think if done right could have been completed and ran "decent" enough to play the games..

I seriously doubt it. The XBox is a low-cache x86 chip running at around 733MHz. The Dreamcast is a high-cache SH4 running at 200MHz. Even with the most fantastic programming and trickery you're looking at a full-cache P4 or Athlon64 running at around the 2-3GHz mark to get full speed.

What's your definition of "playable" or "decent"? A frameskip of 3-4? Seriously, even that would be borderline impossible with XBox hardware (especially considering it's pitiful memory and cache). You might just squeeze out full speed games with a frameskip closer to 9 or 10, but the games are a million miles from "decent".

Please consider the hardware you are talking about, then reply again..

Odd, I wanted and needed live feedback on this issue, not an editorial.

I have found this forum to be funny. When one ask a question, people (some but for the most part everyone else is helpful) try to make you feel out touch for asking it. I thought this whole forum was to chat about what is going on and to ask if you did not. Some people's children

60-75% speed is "decent" enough to me..

For Mr Driller parhaps. Games requiring frame-perfect timing like any of the arcade fighters or shooters would suck.

Considering you can pick up a real DreamCast for US$20, I find all this back and forth about what might have been with Chankast a waste of time.

True, Like alot of emulators, it was more for novelty anyways.. Chankast DOES work damn good on PC tho

Honestly if you used the search feature on this board this question has been asked many times.

There are a handful of games that can run at full speed on 3Ghz hardware but every game I have tried has major graphic glitches or crashes.

Best way to find out though is to try it on your hardware. Can't comment on how it runs with high cache current generation CPU's. But P4 3.0Ghz still not there on speed and get ready for crashes. Unfortunately the emu hasn't been updated in about a year so.... well good luck.

Yes this place is to talk about what you don't know.. however... don't you think it would be rude to ask the same question that has been answered many times before? 1) Reading a title of a post does not tell you what type of question is in it... only a general subject, so the whole "don't read my threads if you don't like it" stuff is silly.

2) If you used a search method... how did you not even know that Chankast was a DC emulator for a PC? If you typed in "Dreamcast Emulator" in google and clicked the first link, you'd see what it was. There is also a Chankast forum FULL of user opinions, so why do you need us to reiterate things that have already been said over and over.

3) People on this very board have already made threads on this and, as Goz said, gave people ideas on how well it works and what games run.... again... a search would have brought this up.

4) Where do you even pull that freedom of speech bit out of? wow.. I mean.. I never said you COULDN'T post whatever you'd like.. just expect this response if you refuse to do a little work yourself. Searching is simple and answers all these easy questions.

5) No one woudl ever say no more "wiring" questions or "Ipac questions" But we don't need another "Is an Ipac a good encoder?" threads. There are hundreds of responses to that on this board, just like there are many responses to other popular questions.

I was actually trying to help you... but you just jump on the defensive. So I'll stay out of this thread now like you want me to... good luck with your problem. I still say you need to do some reading so you become more familiar with all of this emualtor business.

Statements such as "Is there a MAME program that will load it inconjuction with my other roms?" prove you are new to this.. which is fine. we all were. But you can do a bit of reading on it all to become more knowledgeable and ask BETTER QUESTIONS. that is my point. Better questions garner better answers and that is how a forum is most useful.

And btw, that statement is a bit off cuz there is no "MAME program" that will run DC games. MAME is arcade only and you do not need MAME in any way to run Chankast. You may have meant a frontend, in which case, yes... there are frontends that can load up DC games. But MAME has nothing to do with it.

Costing me about AU$500 a quater during summer here (so pretty close to your grand per winter).

Maybe I should just move somewhere like Port Maquarie here in Australia. 25 degree C (77F) summers, 18 degree C (64F) winters. Most moderate climate in the world, apparently.

Actually it's incredibly easy to find the ROMS / ISO's.

yeah... amazingly easy actually. Unless you are looking for a specific rare title, you can find DC games everywhere.

Not a fast enough one and a reliable emulator that doesnt have glitches and crashes.

More power to people who write emulators, if it weren't for them none of us would have killer home made arcade machines.

If you are happy running DC games on a PC that's cool.
But if you don't own a DC yet I recommend going out and getting one, they are dirt cheep now. I've see them all the time for $20.oo at local used game shops. And if you have the ISO's then burn them to disk and play them on a real DC.
