De-casing a TV?
« on: February 10, 2006, 05:26:28 pm »
Is a TV easy/advisable to de-case? Does it look the same as a computer monitor when de-cased?

I'm working on a new project and didn't want the ugly tv case to show.

Thanks!

Depending upon the case, it is very easy.  Take off the back and see what you think.  I took out two t.v.'s and mounted them in arcade monitor brackets from old cabinets.  It was perfect!  I was very happy with the results.  It was quite easy as compared to what I thought.

the tube will come out easily, and will be easy to mount, the PCB, or the circuit boards may be a bit hader to mount as they may be encased in plastic mounts that are moulded directly into the plastic casing.  Either way it can be done and is not as scary as you first think regarding discharging etc....

I have a few pics on my site under monitor of my decased TV...

I de-cased a TV and a monitor for 2 different projects...

The hardest part for me was mounting the tube in my cabinet...I put a 27" TV in place of a 25" monitor, so I had to cut the brackets, and move them in...
It worked out great though...I've attached a picture showing it in, from the front...the PCB is attached to the inside/back of my cab using screws and one and ahalf inch chunks of plastic hose as spacers...
The only thing I can suggest, is to measure carefully, have help lifting the thing into the cab, and make sure you discharge the tube...

Do I need to discharge the tube if all I'm doing is de-casing it and putting it into a cabinet?

If it was me doing it, I would say yes--not because its absolutely required but do you want to be juggling a 40lb tube and its related circuitry all the while worrying about the black sucker cup of death?   :D  seriously if you can mount it easily then don't bother but if you have to futz with it then I would say yes and have one less thing to worry about.
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

I agree with menace...it's not a necessity, if you are able to just drop it in easily...
I had to install mine on my own, so I didn't want to have to worry about it slipping, and trying to re-grip the thing...
I figured if it started to fall, and I tried to re-grip, I may not grab it in the right place, and get a zap, so I discharged, just in case...

Doesn't take much...rubber handled screwdriver, and some wire...if you do a search, you'll fine info on how to do it...

I know what to do, I've just always been too chicken to try it. But, safety is safety I suppose.

I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes! Thanks for the advice!

Have you gotten your TV mounted yet?
