ROM DVD Set
« on: February 04, 2006, 02:58:44 am »
I do feel like I should be able to find this, but I've looked in the Newbie Guide and FAQs and can't locate it.

I received the 10 MAME ROM DVDs and just straight copied them to my HDD, but I'm not sure about where they go.  Do I copy all of the Roms to (folders and all) to the Rom folder in MAME?

What about the other games like NES/SNES, Atari, Sega? (another 6 DVDs)
I know they go in non-MAME folders, but where?  Can someone provide a link to setting these other games up?

You can config. mame to look where the roms are located

" I received the 10 MAME ROM DVDs  "

I suggest you keep that on the quiet before it turns into a "whats right and wrong" war.
I hope you enjoy mame.

Yes it makes more sense to say you've just taken delivery of 5000 or so original arcade machines and dumped all the ROMs off them. That's what the rest of us did after all. ;D

10 DVDs? sheesh.  Assuming that ROMs and CHDs....  Total Rom set is only around 13 gigs but then the CHDs are another 30...

Yeah the first 6 DVD's or so would be the core ROM set - CHD's. Most of the CHD's are not playable. So you can save yourself a couple of hours of copying from DVD to computer if you dont load them all. Search here for CHD and you can get an idea of which ones are playable. By default MAME will look for all of the roms in .zip format in the MAME\ROMS directory.

Hope this helps.

Didn't realize it was a sensitive issue, I'll be more PC in the future.
I'll followup on the CHD issue too. thanks

If you can just point me, I'll be more than happy to read a FAQ or setup.

thanks! ;)

depends on the emulator you are using.  one you get an emulator, you can usually just point them to your roms as well.  doesnt have to be a specific place.

Screenshot archive used to be a good place to start but I just checked the site and it says their domain name just expired.  To answer your question usually each emulator will have a folder titled "roms".  Just put them there. Depending on the emulator/frontend  you might also have folders for artworrk, screenshots, etc.

IMO, your best bet is to always put roms in a "roms" folder either within the emulator folder itself, or a folder named for the system being emulated..

For instance, I set up my PC so that I have folders such as C:/Genesis and C:/NES etc for all the systems I emulate.  I just make the folder structure so that I have a C:/NES/roms folder with all the games and then C:/NES/emulator1, C:/NES/emulator2, etc.... just in case I want to use different emulators for some reason.  Most emulators will let you point out the rom directory when you set it up.. so it's just a matter of pointing it to the right folder.

A shorter answer to you question would be:  It'd doesn't matter at all.  Put them anywhere and just tell the emulator where you put them.
first off your and idiot

Man I love the internet, haha.
