Tube need rejuivinated...
« on: February 03, 2006, 10:24:08 am »
My tube in my monitor needs rejuvinated, and i was wondering where i could get this done at and how much would a descent price be to get it done (dont want to get screwed...) Also would it be cheaper just to get a new tube instead of getting the old one up and full power again?

Most tv repair shops can do it, but I telephone around first though. Ask if they can do picture tube rejuvenation, and if so, what do they charge? Usually the average charge is $50 to as high as $100.

Cost of a new tube depends on the size, manufacturer, and shipping costs. In general, a new 19" tube sells for around $125 to $150 just for the tube. A 25" tube sells for $175 to $250.

All tube convergence must be re-performed as you must transfer the frame ground strap wiring, degausser coil, yoke, and convergence ring manets over to the new tube. Then everything must be re-aligned.

It's a real pain in the a** to converge the picture perfectly :-\

don't waste your money trying to rejuivinate a tube, that $50-$100 dollars can go towards a new monitor. Once you rejuivinate a tube it usually dies in about 6-8 months.

Buying a new tube (for a general purpos monitor, other specific monitors are more expensive) these days is just silly. Buying a tube for 100+ is nuts when a brand new full 19" monitor is 155 from happ.

Really?  I've seen data that says otherwise.  And Ken says you can get another couple years (on the street) from a rejuve tube.  For home use I imagine it's much more.

like wise rejuivination is not a permit fix and overall is not worth the money in today's market in my opinion, unless you got a rejuivinater to do it yourself. 6-8 months is when a monitor starts to die (noticeable change in picture quality) with daily use . If someone plans to use it once a week, I say "go rejuivinate it" but after sometime, you'll just see the problem reoccur.

There's also an old rule-of-thumb: "The bigger the picture tube, the faster it dies".

I had an old Sony Trinitron tv set I bought new in 1973 and was used daily. I rejuvenated it twice over it's lifetime and got 30 years out of the set before the tube finally went. Rejuvenation done properly can make the tube last a long time, but every tube reacts differently. Some may last years while others may last 30 seconds.
