NeoGeo MVS doesn't play games
« on: January 29, 2006, 05:23:08 pm »
Hello. I was wondering if anyone could help me. I just bought a 6-slot NeoGeo MVS cabinet. I plugged in a game into slot 1, it worked for about 10 minutes. I then switched it off to clean it. Alll I did was wipe it with a cloth, but when I turned it back on all it shows is that test screen. The one that starts off with a grid, then if you press start it goes through things like colour test, time and date ect. I tried plugging the game into other slots but no luck. I also tried it with the test switch on or off (even though I cant actually tell which is which, its a blank switch), and with the dip switches in different positions. I only haveone game to test it with, Real Bout 2.

Please can someone help, this is highly annoying stuff  :P

Sounds like it doesn't know there is a cart there.

Power down, pull the cart and clean all of the contacts and slot, then reseat the cart.

If that doesn't work, try the cart in the other slots to narrow down the problem.

Cheers.

Thanks, after trying many times, it worked in the 6th slot. But it WAS working in the 1st one. I'll be getting more games, oh well, I guess its better than it not working at all.

Sorry I have another quick question. The machine is in great condition except for the buttons, they stick all the time. I cant figure out how to open the joystick section. I can see it swings down to reveal the bottom of the sticks, but I cant get there.

Go to Neo-Geo.com and have a read there about cleaning carts and slots. I've had carts that didn't work, didn't work, didn't work, then I finally took them apart and cleaned the contacts properly (I use rubbing alcohol), as well as the slots and then everything worked. Occasionally I'll have to "back a cart out" a bit (e.g. push it all the way down, then pull back slightly).

Also, make sure that the arrow points the right way.

While I don't have a 6-slot and can't seem to find the manual for one, I would bet that there are panel clips that you can reach through the coin door (it's a pain for me to reach mine).

Another useful resource is hardmvs.com

Cheers

Cool, thanks. I knew about those sites already, but I shall read into them more deeply. Do you mind telling me what  panel clips are?  :P

I'm a bit broke right now (you can guess how badly, by the fact that I cant even afford MVS carts!), so do you know what I would like to do? It would be great if I could hook up a PC to this and play MVS games that way. But I wouldnt want to cannibalize it in any way.

They are clips that secure the control panel and would likely be on either side of the CP:

The equipment needed for interfacing without doing "permanent" damage may be more than you want to pay right now. If I wanted to put a computer running MAME in a NG 6-slot, I would use an ArcadeVGA video card to drive the monitor, a JPac encoder and I would build a NG-to-Jamma convertor using a fingerboard and short JAMMA harness.

The ArcadeVGA and JPac will will interface nicely with a standard JAMMA cabinet. The 6-slot, however, is not standard JAMMA (but is close), so I would build a convertor that plugs into the JAMMA harness and reroutes the audio (there are some details in the Projects section at HardMVS).

Cheers.

Wow! Your online right now arent you! You really know your stuff! Sorry, in that case, can I ask another question? I heard something about some MVS machines can play JAMMA NeoGeo games, how can I tell if mine does?

For example, if I bought this:

Would it work?

Would it work?

There are two types of Neo-Geo carts -- MVS (arcade) and AES (home). Your system will plays MVS carts.

JAMMA is a wiring standard that refers to the harness used to connect the game board (in your case, this would be the 6-slot mother board you put the carts into) to the controls, power and monitor. While the multi-slots MVS boards are not JAMMA, they are very close. Often times, people will throw the term JAMMA into their auction titles to pick up hits from people searching for JAMMA game boards.

In the specific case you cite, yep, that'll work and Tony is a good seller who ships fast (or at least I've never had any problems with anything I have ever bought from him and he is local to me, so I usually get my stuff in a day).

Cheers.

Puts you a step ahead of me ... never knew anything about AES until I bought my MVS ...

Cheers.
