Aluminium Control Panel
« on: January 28, 2006, 10:12:19 am »
A couple of weeks ago I bought a Centipede conversion from Peale (thanks again Peale!) that will eventually be Mamed; I'd restore it if it was possible, but the cab is too far gone. Anyways, I wanted to determine what kind of setup I could have in that cab- I wanted two sticks, 4 buttons each and a trackball, which seemed a little much for a 23 3/4" wide control panel. So I decided to CNC this test panel to see just how much I could fit onto a panel that size and still keep things comfortable.

I machined the panel quickly last thing in the day, so needless to say I screwed it up, but it still does it's job. I cut the whole thing inside out, so the scoring that was supposed to be on the inside once it's bent up is on the outside. Also, I didn't bother bending it at work with a proper bender; nope, figured I'd just bring it home and bend it by hand. Then I realized how tough 1/16" aluminium is, even when it's been scored 1/32" at the bend marks. So player 1's side is bent up arse ways.

Other than that, it turned out okay. Here's some photos of it half-wired. Still to add is the LED-Wiz and Opti-Wiz. I'm also going to get a translucent red ball. There's a few translucent buttons on there that I got to see which colors I'd go for, the rest are ones I had lying around. The joysticks are Suzo Inductives, I still have to wire up a 4-way pot to each so I can use the LED-Wiz to switch them from 4-way to 8-way as the game needs it.
