SF Anniversary Style Cab
« on: January 25, 2006, 04:11:24 pm »
I have finally started working on my first full sized upright cab, after practicing by building a 2/3 scale galaga.

The basic plan is an american style fighter cab with a WG k7400 monitor and swappable control panels (one with happ parts and the other with sanwa).  I will be playing mostly mid 80s to 90s games on this (primarily fighters and horiz shooters), so I'm going with a simple 6 button 2player control panel.  I prefer to use happ sticks for games like tmnt and metal slug, and prefer sanwa sticks for games like progear and street fighter; so the only solution seems to have 2 swappable CPs.  I like the idea of having 2 different CPs that will not only have different sticks/buttons, but different overall shapes and art.  The happ CP will have an american shape with capcom overlay, and the sanwa CP will have a slightly japanese style shape with a custom overlay.

I think I'm going to paint it white, thats why I thought of fist of the white lotus.  If not white, then I might call it shoryucade- which ever name is the least annoying.  Both suck in their own special ways.  I've been playing with designs in SketchUp, which is very easy to use and hope to post some renders up.

Well here is the american style CP.  I wanted to keep it traditional, hence the typical shape and the capcom overlay.  It was so easy to cut the holes in the plexi with the laminate router bit, and of course no cracks!  I wanted to use lexan, but the only size big enough that HD had was a $60 piece.  The plexi didn't crack and was only $8.

When I was routing the sides the bearing wasn't rotating so it kinda burned the edges a little.  I didn't really take anything off so nothing to worry about, but it left that brown mark u see on the sides.  I think I tightened the end too much fearing that it would come off during routing.

The thing that sucked is I wanted the plexi to be flush with the 3/4" tmolding- but problem is I couldn't find any 5/8" MDF.  I ended up getting 1/2" MDF and gluing a piece of 1/8 hardboard on top of it.  It will be covered by the overlay, but kind of annoying I couldn't find the right stuff.

I only put one additional button because I'm very anti-frankenpanel.

I don't know if I'm going to use white or black t molding, but its pretty boring up to this point.

Fist of the White Lotus sounds like a cool name to me.

these are some very rough designs i came up with.  the white cab didn't look as good as I imagined- but I guess it's just a render.  I tried some black ones that looked a little better.  The sidearts also didn't look as good as I thought, and the marquee is very much temporary.

I originally wanted the sideart to be Ryu doing a shoryuken that would be the shape of the side- hence the name "fist of the white lotus", but these  commercial cab guys did something similar (I cant beleive they came up with that too).Any suggestions people?

Really love the direction this is going!
Add to that that I had the EXACT same idea with swappable control-panels; one american styled with Ultimarc-sticks and competition buttons, and one Japanese styled with Sanwa and Seimitsu parts in a contoured layout, so I'll be watching this thread very closely.

American style cabs from the 90's do look best in darker colors I think.
I think a Ryu performing a dragonpunch would definately look good as sideart, just be sure to use another one than Ultracade:

Oh, and the name: Fist of the White Lotus sounds WAY better then anything with cade in it! :)

meh, your artwork idea is kinda bland... i dont like the artork for Sf2 my self, and the whole idea to use the DC SSF2T for the artwork on side/stick is not going to work either and it will get extremely pixilated.

He said suggestions dude! ;)

Well, I personally like some of the streetfighter art, there's lot's of styles to choose from, but I personally like the more anime-styled graphics as used on the Alpha/Zero series of streetfighter.
The upside of the anime-style of graphics is that it's better to trace/vectorize, this will give you a crisp image at any size, even as a complete sideart.
Anyway I'd try to stick with one style of (SF) artwork.

actually I appreciate him telling me my artwork is bland- because he's right.

Right now I'm either gonna go with the street fighter Udon artwork, or the style from the GBA game which is pictured below.  Of course the gba images are WAY to small, but I have the eternal challenge artbook that has some of the same images in large high quality form.

The one with ryu doing a shoryuken is what made me think I could make it the profile of my cab with some adjustments.  Of course a few months down the road I saw the ultracade which completely ruined the idea for me.

hopefully I can start constructing the cab this weekend, and I'll post some pics.  I do have some jamma boards, so it will have a jamma harness but I got a JPAC & arcadeVGA to hook a pc up to it too.

This art is from Udon that was in a couple of the rough cuts

the pics above are intentionally small in size to be forum board friendly.  Like I said, I can do high res scans from my Street Fighter artbooks and clean them up in photoshop (or vectorize them if need be).

The reason I was asking is because I did High Res scans of the Udon comic and the Street fighter Art book and they came out bad.  If you do a 300 dpi scan on a comic you get bad results.  Thats why I was asking.

I really like the first style you posted; the dark outlines make the charcter stand out much more.
But since you have the Eternal Challenge Artbook, there will be more than enough to choose from...

I came across this candy cab with a cool color scheme (legztec on killercabs).  Do you guys think it would look good on an american style upright?  I changed the SF logo to match, and  I do have both black and white japanese sticks/buttons.  I wonder if I can spray paint the t-molding silver/grey?

this thing is GIGANTIC.  I wanted a lot of room inside for the PC & jamma boards but I over did it.  I guess renders can sometimes be misleading when you make them with no frame of reference.  i would have finished the construction portion and painted by now, but I'm getting headaches from the MDF dust (cheap masks aren't cutting it for me)
