User XP

Alternatively, the ceator of GameEx made a great 'frontend sheller'.

http://tomspeirs.com/gameex/Shell.htm

It's called instant sheller, and might be better for you if  you're afraid of the first route. If ya like it, toss him some donation cash... I think he needs it. :)

Not sure what the problem could be, unless

A.) You have the file saved in the wrong place

or

B.) the file isn't saved as the correct size/depth/filetype

or

c.) You missed one of the instructions

or

d.) a mixture of the above.

So... what software/technique did you use to put in the boot screen, for starters?

littlewhitedog.com (Here) has an article about how to do this manually. Well, for the boot logo at least. It was written for Win2k but works the same in XP. Been using this method for years. Its hard to mess up and always leaves you a way out.

You can also do a little bit of "cheating" by turning off the logon screen @ startup, hiding the desktop icons, make your background solid black, and placing your FE in the startup menu so it comes up immediatly. I even added a personalized .wav file to let me know Windows booted properly. You wouldn't even know its running a Microsoft OS until you hit the power button (to tur it off) which ends the PC into hibernation and displays the "Windows is hibernating" logo.
Signature tags are dumb.

Right click 'My Computer' then click Properties. Under the 'Advanced' tab, click Settings next to Startup and Recovery. Click Edit.

After the command /fastdetect add /bootlog /noguiboot. So the end of the line should look like this /fastdetect /bootlog /noguiboot notice the spaces!!!

Now drop a 16 colour, 640x480 bmp file named boot.bmp into C:\Windows
That's it!
