Removing old versions of games?
« on: January 19, 2006, 09:30:34 am »
Hello,

I have a MAME machine setup and running in a place where a bunch of kids hop on and play it.  I have already used MCM to remove all the adult content from it.  Is there a way to remove all the other "versions" of games, ie remove all the Street Fighter versions except for the latest (or most stable?)  Basically I just want 1 listing of each game in the menu (I use MAmeWah 1.6).  Thanks in advance!!

You could try my 'Clone Mover' for now. It's a little out of date, but it will seperate all clone roms from Mame 0.90 out of your roms folder. I really need to make an updated version...

Sorry  I see how it works now.  Would be perfect if it "knew" which clones to keep (so that the set would work in the case that the parent is bad).  Or perhaps I could use it to remove the clones, and then a different program to remove the "non-working" roms?

Yep, I'll update it and add options to move non-working and mahjong games too.

Okay, I stuck a new version that gives you the option to move clones, mahjong, non-working and cassette roms.

Well I haven't tested it yet, but i did look through it and it seems like it will work great (what happens if the file doesn't exist in the first place though ie, incomplete set?)  Anway, I clicked through all your google ads from 2 different computers :)

OK just ran it as a test....not sure, but i think PATH is reserved...got this on my screen:

All CLONE roms found in
PATH=C:\Program Files\Compaq\Compaq Management Agents\Dmi\Win32\Bin;C:\WINDOWS\s
ystem32;C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\AT
I Control Panel;"C:\Program Files\Symantec\Norton Ghost 2003\";C:\Program Files\
Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared\;c:\mingw\bin;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTS
ystem\;C:\Program Files\Common Files\WatchGuard\lib
will be moved to C:\BADROMS\CLONES
Press any key to continue . . .

Still seemed to work though :)

If it tries to move a rom zip file that doesn't exist it'll say "File not found" and skip past it. You probably won't even notice it.

Oh yeah, I meant to remove that path line. I'll fix it up now...

EDIT: Okay, now it's fixed so the path info isn't displayed.

Wow, this thing worked great! After all of the hours I spent hunting down clones and then trying to decide which ones needed to go, I still had tons out there. It was nice having a program decide for me what to move. It knocked out almost half of my list so it is much more manageable now. Way to go!
One issue is I noticed that it moved Pac-Man. That's a no-no.  ;)

Fixed. Pacman is now safe.
Funny how nobody ever goes "Wow, you have an arcade machine in your house, does it have Puckman?"

I like to have Puckman there too. It cracks people up to see the names that they are so familiar with changed to Japanese.

I used this on my version .76 I hope that is not bad. BUT I have had a few complaints already. I guess there is a game caled Golden Ax and now it doesn't work. I guess probably the parent rom stayed and it was teh clone that worked. Do I now just go find it in my files and stick it back in the roms folder? Also I still have a mess of games that don't work. I am running Mamewah. If there is anything else I need to do please let me know.

That batch file is only intended to be used with a 0.103 set of roms, a 0.76 set would use different names for several roms. I did make a clone mover (clones only, doesn't move anything else) for 0.77 that might work better for you, grab it here. I used catver.ini to decypher which roms were non-working, so it may have missed some; I'm not sure how accurate catver.ini is when in comes to non-working roms.

There's no easy way of determining what version of Mame your set best suits.

Usually people maintain their rom sets according to whatever version of Mame they're using; i.e. use ClrMame to rebuild your roms according to the Mame.exe that you use.

Hey JoyMonkey, I updated to 103 and ran everything fine but the batch file didn't work. It just kept saying file not found.
Could this haveanything to do with my roms being on my extra HD? I have your file IN the roms folder but it is not on the c drive. I don't know if this has anything to do with anything.
Please let me know cause I would like to clean up my list. I really want all those majhong games off. I also need to look into MCM to get the adult content off. Thanks

I don't know what the problem could be there. I've run it from another drive and had it move roms to the C drive without any hassle. Basically, the bat file is executing commands like this:
move kiwame.zip C:\BADROMS\MAHJONG\
from whatever folder you run it in.
Are your roms unzipped into folders? It expects them to be zip files. Make sure the cmove103.bat file is in the same folder as your rom zips.
Also, check your C drive to see if the bat was able to create the BADROMS folder.

I don't know what is wrong either. I will try again in the morning. I know it made the badroms forlder on the C: drive, but nothing goes into them! When I used it on my older roms, it worked fine but now nothing.
I will let you know if I find anything out.
Thanks for your help.

Some versions of Windows (can't remember which ones off the top of my head) don't include the move command that my bat uses to move the roms. You could try downloading move.exe and putting it into your roms folder too. You can grab it here:
