MAMEWAH HELP and FUTURE HELP
« on: January 15, 2006, 08:12:07 am »
Doing the front end configuration and wamewah just sucks.
I've read multiple pages, threads, SEARCH BUTTON, everything.
I just cannot get it to work at all.

IS there anyone there with a fully configured MAMEWAH That can just zip up their MAMEWAH FRONTEND Folder and just pop it up on a site for download?

Im sure others could really use this.

I've been using MAXIMUS ARCADE and I like it, but MAMEWAH looks like the way to go, it just is super hard to get working.

If i had a nicely configured mamewah to load onto my C: or E: Drive and just unzip and play with, perhaps mess around with I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
C1D

I have to tell ya, Minwah is beloved around here, and making a comment like that blows a lot of chances for help.  What it does do is open yourself for ridicule from this community.  Minwah is a 25 year old guy who did this in his freetime and gave it to us.  FOR FREE!  We appreciate the frustration, as most of us have experienced it, but don't start a thread like that.  I know this may be a one time kind of comment, but then other members don't leave it at that and that is not good.

Now, if you want some help, check out my mamewah thread here.  It will hook you up.

I agree with you McCoy. I get a little ticked off with people who'll make a statement like that. If a User goes to the Mamewah homepage, they'll also get a nice link to the tools I listed above.

http://mamewah.mameworld.net/links.htm

That and a little reading and your all set. A couple of "polite" questions would help too.

Doing the front end configuration and wamewah just sucks.
There is a big difference between an application sucking and a user that's not bright enough to figure out how to configure it.

Mamewah does have a bit of a learning curve, but once you get it figured out it's remarkably powerful and flexible.
If you want to take advantage of all of Mamewahs features you're going to have to invest the time to learn how all of the ini files work, and how they work together. John's site has all the ini's you could possibly need if you want to look and see how they're constructed.

If you don't want to take the time to figure it out just drop back to the 1.61. version and use the configurator listed above.

Besides, the documentation that Mini provides with his program is thorough and complete and - OK, I gotta stop now, I'm cracking myself up.

So I'm kidding abou the documentation, but the rest of the post holds true; The info is out there if you're willing to look for it.
There' s no secret handshake, no private password. Everyone else who runs Mamewah has figured it out.
Put in your time and you'll have your "Ah-Ha" moment where it all just clicks.

I'm sure many of us have muttered your same Mamewah sentiments under our breath while setting it up but we have enough appreciation for the free program and it's obviously intoxicated author to request help in a more respectful manner.

WOW, Comment taken out of context.  I ment it sucks becuase I am not bright enough to figure it out.  If i can't get something it sucks.  If I say something sucks and don't use it then it really does SUCK.  I want to use MAMEWAH so obviosly i don't think it SUCKS but it sucks since i cannot figure it out.  Anyway hope i didn't confuse anyone. Long story short Even if i cannot get it to work no disrespect to MAMEWAH.  It was frustration talking.

As you will all see in a few days, I have been doing mad amount of research and work on my cabinet.  I have a full work log and page ready to go soon and will be posted on the announcements page.  I know from reading and reseach that Mamewah is the Prefered Front end.  I got slightly confised by the naming scheme from 1.61 to .97.  Since his latest news says people keep requestion .97 I thought it was newer or something then after more reading I realized that 1.61 is the newest.

I have done lots of reading and tring to figure it out and I could not.  So I decided to nicely ask for help.  I will get it eventuially.  I was hoping there was someone who could just throw me a nicely configured file and then i could figure it out from there and play with it.  I also found the 1.61 config tool and will try that too.  RIght now Im working on the webpage and the rest of the hardware so I will get back to it eventually (week or so).  I was still hoping some nice tidbits of help can still be thrown myway.

Thanks,
C1D

What confuses me a little bit with people having trouble configuring is that Mamewah (v1.61)  already comes with an example setup (see the mame.ini file?)  All you need to do is alter the following lines accordingly (it could be different for everyone):

rom_path                                  c:\mame\roms
emulator_executable                       c:\mame\mame.exe
artwork_1_image_path                      c:\mame\snap

That should be enough for a working (albeit basic) setup.  The only other point to note is the list_generation_method - this should be OK but for old versions of MAME (before 0.84 IIRC) it will need to be set to 'rom_folder_vs_listinfo'.  I suppose I should get my arse in gear and release the latest version officially, since this adds some 'auto' features so you don't really need to know this.

Simply Googling 'mamewah configuration files' provides loads of help.  I also have the many .ini configuration files available for download included on my site with a decent explanation of their use.  I was able to set it up on my cab from scratch with the CPviewer page and the Screenshots archive in under an hour, research included.

Mamewah is well worth the (small) bit of effort to get it set up.

I can understand the frustration. I love mamewah (and several other FE) but the first time I set it up I was more then "grumpy". The problem is we get to used to GUI that do all the work and we get a bit lazy. I do a small amount of tech Help desk work and I cant tell you how many times I get frustrated that somebody doesnt read the documentation that came with whatever they are working on. Problem is, I'm that same guy sometimes. I rip it open and fire it up before I read/understand or examine.

Mamewah rocks when its set up, and that was enough insentive for me to "dig in" so to speak.

Hey, thanks for all the help so far.

I atually got Mamewah 1.61 up and running.
I tried running the 1.62b version but the 1.61 config tool don;t work with it.

The 1.61 config tool is really easy to use and I found it very helpful so far.

It does not recognise all the roms in the folder only 6019 i think.  I believe there are alot more.

I also got Zinc working but I cannot find a ZINC layout - so im gonna keep looking.

One thing I cannot do is get the screenshots to show up.  And I don;t have movie previews yet since I have not received the dvd's with the movies yet.

any advice for getting the screen shots to show up - i just have a part of the screen that says MAME - thats it.

I set the right artwork directory i think, but hey any advice would help.

also is there a page with lots of layouts?

lastly, i am using a JVC TV 27 inch. should i use 640x480 layout art or 800x600 layout art.

Thanks,
C1D

I just cannot figure it out.
I using the COnfig tool on Blue Camel.org.

I downloaded the ZINC Mamewah background.  I even checked it in the Layout designer.

The Flyers and Snaps Art work points to the right folders. I get nothing except the Standard Black Mamewah logo's in those areas.

I tried poiting ZInc to the Mame roms folder and I pointed the artwork directories to FLyers and Snaps in the Mame folder to see if that would work and same thing.

So i pointed back to the Roms directory inside the Zinc Folder
I pointed Artword 1 and Artwork 2 back to
E:\zinc\snaps
E:\Zinc\Flyers

I get nothing.

WHy will mamewah not read my artwork in those folders and display them

I got this working for my MAME SKIN.. SO no issues there.

Im using the arcades essensials skin and I have Marquees and Snaps working fine.

WHy is Mamewah not displaying this information for ZINC?
Any help would be appreciated.
Perhaps even another Zinc skin download would be nice too since i only found the one on the Spanish site (http://www.marcianitos.org/tutoriales/mamewahcfg/mwdisenos.htm
)

Thanks...

With zinc in particular, the names of the roms and the names of the snaps have to match, and they do not probably in zinc.  I know someone will chime in to explain better.

WHy is Mamewah not displaying this information for ZINC?

You need to understand ZiNc works a lot differently than MAME (eg you use 'zinc 1' to run a game, not zinc gamename).

Yes Mameworlds boards have been down for a day or two...keep trying it will be back at some point.  The main Mameworld page should announce when they are working...

As someone else pointed out, in order for snaps, flyers or anything else to display in your game list it must have the (exact) same name as the rom it corresponds to.

Mamewah basically plays a game of snap with the two files and if they match it will display the picture.

You'll probably find that your zinc roms are named differently to your snapshots.

Overall Mamewah is extremely straight forward and you will find you will come to a point where you just 'get' it. I figured most of Mamewah out by downloading the support files and ini's from the cpviewer site and looking at how they were set up.

Also if you check out the docs folder in mamewah there are text files explaining exactly how it all works and what commands do what.

The information is all there if you look for it.

Now..

Can someone show me a SNIPIT of a INI file from Mamewah to correct my problem.

MY mame preview movies start Right away the screenshot just dissapears.
How do i delay the movie 3-5 second so just the screenshot shows and then the mini movie preview starts?

I saw it somewhere but the search feature is faling me at 4 am....

Just an INI snippit  would help me out alot.

Thanks,

### Movie Options ###
intro_movie_file
exit_movie_file
keep_movie_preview_aspect   no
delay_before_movie_preview  1
music_movie_mix             merge
movie_volume                100

Its in this section of your main mamewah config file. Where it states 'delay_before_movie_preview' simply increase the number to show however many seconds you want the screenshot to display before your avi starts.

Daphne was probably the one I had the most difficulty setting up.

It really doesn't like complex paths so its best to try to keep everything nice and neat.

Did you set up your own ini or download the example from jcrouses cpviewer site?.

Make sure you have -fullscreen and  -nohwaccel set in your commandline.
