I like it.  Simplicity is good.  Not everything has to have spinning transparent water drops and refraction out the anus.

I'm with Mr. C.  I'm all about simplicity in design.  My middle ---smurfing--- name is simplicity.  But this thing looks like it was made with the free website builder tool that you get if you sign up for Godaddy's cheapest webhosting package.  It's garish and has crappy typography (for example what's with chopping the word Nintendo up with a diaganol line?).

If you want to see someone who knows how to make attractive simple design, look at the Nintendo Revolution -- the console itself, that is.  That is simple, elegant design.  To my eyes this menu is simple in the way that something a 4th grader makes is generally simple.

Luckily there's no way the final design will end up looking like that.  Well....hopefully, that is.  I can't say the Xbox dashboard is any better than that.

Oh yeah....and that list is MUCH smaller than I was expecting.  If they want their backward compatibility to make a big impact they'd better work on expanding that list by like ten-fold.

It's decent.  It's better than the PS2's.

I think that's what virtual console is for.
Plus why do you need a menu for backwards compatibility.  Just put game in and play :)
Plus read the article, plenty of mock up pics.

I wonder if it comes with a hammer to help get the NES catridges into the slot on the front...

It isnt the menu, its something someone photoshopped, you can tell.

The website www.classicgamer.com took part in the online questionnaire, which offered a more in-depth look at the game download system for Nintendo's next-generation console than has previously been seen. The survey even featured mocked-up artwork representing how the graphical user interface for the process may look and function. The concepts below are by no means final, but nevertheless Zanthus prepared these materials based on direction from Nintendo of America and therefore they should not be discounted.

Yeah, like I mentioned, it's a preliminary design, or "mock up"...and I'm with Chad and Shmokes on the simplicity thing. I'm a professional graphic designer/creative director, so breaking things down graphically is what I'm all about.

What I don't completely understand is whether or not this design was sanctioned by Nintendo. The paragraph you quoted seems to hint that it was, (ie: "based on direction from Nintendo")

So my point is, ack! It's horrible! I'm sure the final design will me much more acceptable; more refined and professional, but maybe Nintendo should be more careful about what type of imagery they allow to represent their product. In the console world, style is important...especially when there isn't much info out there to pick apart re: the Revolution.

Yeah, I'm not totally clear on the basis of the design either, and yes... It is definitely horrible.

I don't need flashy 3D or the like, but I definitely expect something better than what appears to be a web page created by a 5 year old.

Yeah, the list of titles for NES, SNES, and N64 is very underwhelming.

I have my doubts about the authenticity of this.
