  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
help with this monitor please
« on: January 06, 2006, 10:01:41 pm »
I have this monitor and it has a broken tube. I want to try o put the chasis on another tube I have but I need some help. I am not going to do anything with it right now. I know there are potentialy 30k volts running through these things so I will ask the people who know if they can help me through a few things first.
I am going to post some pics I took of the back. I do not remember anything theguy I bought it from told me. The tube had a sticker on it that said:
Philips components
AG6EAK252X44
VB9512  339029  1
BSI CERT.  6511
MADE IN GERMANY

Later I looked around and found a sticker on the frame that said set up inspected and tested by BV Sinc. I tried to get in touch with them but no luck.
Another sticker right by the BV Sinc sticker says NSN 310

So here are the pics. What do I need to know about the other tube I have to know if it will work with this chasis.
Do I need to look around on the chasis and try to give some more info or better picks so you can help?
My husband is good with electronics and will help me do some testing. I have a multimeter. If someone can tell me what to test I will be able to do it. I think I read somewhere that you could test the ohms without discharging the monitor.
I am new at this but am trying to do this and I apreciate the help I have gotten so far. Thanks
AMBER

Just out of curiosity, can you take a picture of the neck of the tube where you said it was arcing blue?  Can you see a crack in the tube at the pins for the socket?  Just want to make sure it is not something arcing on the CRT board before you condemn it completely.

The "V Size" and "V Lin" trimpots on the remote adjustment board are both broken.

This monitor does not look familiar to me.

Very important-firstly your new tube will have to be a similar type(size/resolution/frequency),usually if they look exactly the same the chassis will work BUT you will probably have to swap the scan coils as well otherwise your chassis will go up in smoke. The most important number you have is the tube number which is the 252x44,whats your other tube number?I have not seen your chassis before looks like a cross between kortec/pentranic with a bit wells gardner chucked in probably some sort of korean import-there must be a name on it somewhere perhaps underneath on the chassis solder side.

The numbers of the tube on the philips TV are:
A63AFW36X
R25GNGN
9301-763-20443

Should I take a picture of the tube while it sparks or just sitting there?
Can I unsrew the chasis fom the fram to look underneath? I know not to try to pull it off or touch the wires and stuff but can it be unsrewed from the frame to look under it?
Thanks

Take a picture of it just sitting there.  A picture while arcing would be good, but no sense causing more damage. Try to point with something to where it was arcing. Use something insulated like a toothpick, plastic adjustment tool etc. The two broken pots should be replaced.

How big is your original tube and your new tube, because i could be wrong but one sounds like a high frequency tube to me?if so they are not compatible.By the way if you get blue sparks from the tube neck your tube is knackered as we say in the uk.

alright so what is my next step with this? Is there a way to find out if the chasis is compatable with my other tube? Or should I just go with the 8liners chasis? I am trying to save as much money as I can.
Thanks

Sorry not sure what advice to give on this, did you say you had another tube with a matching chassis if so why have you not tryed that in your cab yet.Trouble is like anything, if your infront of the problem you can give good advice,if you not able to see the problem first hand your advice could be fatal,I dont want to give bad advice.I have put unmatched chassis onto tubes before, but the tube was always the same size and frequency(also i had to change the scan coils which can be a task in itself).
My advice is check to see if anyone on this forum resides near to you, maybe they would come and give you a hand, trouble is your now in very technical area with this problem. But please tell me about your other chassis(is it complete with a tube, does it work, what is the problem with using it?)

No I do not have another Chasis. I have another tube. I ha a philips TV and it is about the same size. I called BVS inc and got a guy who is trying to help me with the prob. They are in VA though. I think he may be looking into the tube and if I could replace it. That would be fine. I really like my monitor. I haver been looking into getting a TV and using S video.
I can't decide!!!
I appreciate everyones help. I think my next step may be to take the monitor in and have it discharged and get the chasis off since the tube is not good anyway.

tv with svideo is no comparison to a proper arcade monitor
