Cell-phone etiquette solution?
« on: January 06, 2006, 08:12:44 am »
http://www.autothing.com/funthings/Tech%20Reviews/Cell%20Phone%20Jammer%20Review.htm

I've wanted something like this since noticing the increasing "I'm important, and they're not talking about ME when they say turn your ringer off" attitude or flat inability to remember to turn your phone (at the very LEAST) on vibrate.

Someone's phone goes off in church (where they had to walk past free-standing signs specifically made to tell people to turn phones on vibrate), the movies (where they've taken to putting an "ad" telling you to turn it off, and politely asking someone to take their call outside the theater gets you looked at like you just called their mom a whore), meetings (does making yourself appear mentally deficient move you up the corporate ladder faster?) and anywhere else people can't seem to understand discretion or common courtesy.

Sucks that it's so friggen expensive, but I guess if it WEREN'T, these things would be selling like hotcakes, because I bet I'm not alone in my feelings.  I understand the need to be "reachable", just not the inability to respect everyone and silence your phone.

Yeah, then you get 30 people all whining that their cell has no reception, though, and they'll be even louder.  Cell phones didn't cause the sharp decline in courtesy, they just gave people an outlet to demonstrate how far they had fallen.

Easier and cheaper to take the phone of the culprit and smash it front of them.

$1 for everytime I wanted to do this and I would have....well probably only a couple of bucks but that's not really the point.

What really gets me is the people who walk away from their phone in a captive environment and don't turn the ringer off.  People do that where I work several times a day.  If I have to hear 50 Cent phone rings from my cube, for an hour straight, one more time I'm going to steal the phone and call threats into the Oval Office with it.

Sadly, it's upper managers who seem to do it most, since they consider themselves to freakin important that your comfort is not only irrelevant but a stupid concept.

Even this doesn't help much, really.  When my wife and I were in the theater this weekend there was like 8 people in there.  This guy comes in and sits directly behind us, leans forward half the movie, and is clearly having respiratory problems.  I didn't look back but from the breathing sounds I assumed it was an old man with oxygen so there was really no need to be pissed, just uncomfortable.  When the movie is over, I turn around, no, it's a perverted looking obese guy who is breathing so poorly he's gurgling on his own fat.  500 empty seats in there and he is breathing on us for two hours.  I probably have a disease now.

He gave you swollen neck disease.  Maybe he was like that one chick who got her phone swallowed by herself......er.....tripped and fell on her phone ::)

I wish I knew if there were theaters around me doing this, because to me, it's a selling point.

Or until the FCC found out.  Way illegal.  Federal illegal.  What happens the first time someone dies 'cause a call to 911 didn't go through and they find out it was your jammer that caused the problem???

25 to life would be my guess.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

Cell phones fail to get a proper signal all the time.  No one would ever even think about a jammer.

Heh.

I subcontract for a few water companies.  I have to be reachable 24/7, so, invariably theres a cell phone glued to my hip.

When I do have to talk, I am sure to leave whatever environment I'm in to find a quiet bathroom, vestibule, or the like.

Its not the cellphones, its the retarditty of the people using them.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

Absolutely nothing wrong with having to be reachable at any time.

Is there a reason people can't set their phone to vibrate though?

Then, it's bad enough Eminem has to let us know that person's an ass hat, they feel the need to answer and talk as if they're talking on a string-n-can phone.  And unlike you, who has some common sense, they see no problem with irritating a theater full of people.

If I can figure this stuff out, it's not difficult.  My phone is on vibrate 90% of the time.  As for a 911 call, I can't make 'em inside a large store such as Wal-Mart and I have no service inside some theaters, and if I needed to make THAT type of call, I'd be running out of the theater for help, not sitting in my seat.

The retarditty factor is high, and is only getting higher with kids having them and becoming almost a toy.  Think of what it's going to be like in 5 years....10 years....it's gonna get worse and worse.  And Chad is gonna get arrested someday for hurting someone's feelings because that's the worst thing you can do nowadays short of actually killing them ::)

Someday?    ;)

The stupid part is the conversation that results in the Black Eyed Peas ring.

"What up"
"yeah, I'm at the movies"
"naw, it's like half over"
"so he dies in the end?  Haw"
"hang on, this guy is staring at me"
"ow ow OW"

"yes, 911, we need an ambulance right away"

My 7 year old daughter asked for a cell phone for christmas. She saw the commercials for ones like the Firefly and Migo.

And dontcha just love the way they market 'em to your kids, then to you, as a way to "keep in touch and know where they are"?  My son's friend has lied straight out to his mom when she calls him on "his" phone (I say "his" because they pay the bill), only for me to bust him when calling his house later on and telling his parents where they are.

Where's THAT phone commercial ;D

It's like that "leash" that was semi-popular a few years back, only the newer digital version of it, and without the *YOINK* factor.  It's the "how to feel like I'm doing right by my children without investing too much time into it".

Hey how's thisa for mobile phnee (cell phone for all you yakee so and so's) story.

A mate of mine recently lost his phone charger. Now, a sensible person would shell out the $40 Ausie bucks to buy a new charger. NO!

He decided to attach one of them gigantic 6 volt batteries to his phone "because it's only $5 per battery"

 :P

So he's wealking around with a Seimens phone gaffer-taped to a battery. About 3 weeks later (and several rewquests from restaurant managers to take his 'bomb' elsewhere) he decides to make it look prettier.

Today we hooked up at a pub and lo and behold, he's stuffed the battery+phone into a stuffed wombat.

So when he wants to make a call, he puts the wombat to his ear and talks.

Admittedly, he's been picking up heaps of cheesecake this way.

I'll get photos of it next week.  ;D
Now in a tasty new flavour.

So many times I've seen/heard someone receiving or making a call or text message in a movie theater.  So many times I've wished that I had the balls to walk over, snatch the phone out of their hand and throw it across the theater.  It's absurd to say anything.  It's not like you are giving them information they don't have.  These people are fully aware that they shouldn't be using a cell phone in that situation -- telling them doesn't help the problem.  Throwing their phone and very likely breaking it will send the message that they need.  Unfortunately I'm not ballsy enough.  Maybe if I wasn't a 5'6" skinny sonofabitch.

See this is why people shouldn't carry guns. It would be SO tempting and easy to put a little scare into people like this. (But accidents would happen, as they do...)

I'm afraid of 14 year old girls with guns too. :(

And I can't find it anymore :'(

Unfortunately I'm not ballsy enough.  Maybe if I wasn't a 5'6" skinny sonofabitch.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.

Living the delusional lifestyle.

how about them rude cashiers.....

Today I'm on the phone while the cashiers ringing up my stuff at wally-world...I'm talking extra loud just to let everyone around me know that this is a very important call, when all of a sudden the cashier has the nerve to interupt my phone conversation to tell me how much all my stuff was.....

I mean come on clearly she could have waited till I was done talking to let me know that....

the nerve of some people....

That is SO wierd!  I was in Wal-Mart today waiting for some ass hat in front of me to pay for all his cheap Chinese-made crap while he was on his phone and I could clearly tell he wasn't paying attention.  I ALMOST reached him as I was going to punch him in the kidneys when I saw just before throwing that punch that he was reaching for his wallet finally.

Hey, you weren't in Black Mountain today were you?  ;)
