19"

Both Pacman and Donkey Kong had the monitor mounted vertically.

If you get a horizontal mount monitor, a 27" will give you roughly the same size image on DK and Pacman when displayed vertically (with black bars on either side of the screen).

would using a 17 inch monitor be too small? what do you think?

Actually, the Nintendo Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong uprights used a 20" monitor. The Midway Pacman upright used a 19" monitor.

I use a 17"  computer monitor on my Galaga-mame machine. I have it in horizontal orientaion and not vertical though. With my bezel, which I believe is made for a vertical 19", the sides of the monitor almost come to the edge of the viewing area and the top and bottom have a pretty good amount of space. I am ok with this size but I think it is all a matter of preference.
