I use .79
It was the last version to recognise a Bogus version of Galaga that gives you fast fire without enabling a cheat.

im a 78 man. first version i downloaded. tried a later one and it took forever to load roms. im happy with whatever roms i can play on 78 so ill stick to it. for any project i might have that requires specific games i might try earlier...

.79 is the first / only version I have ever downloaded, and have the full pack of roms to go with it. I don't see any reason why I would need to switch. If it works, don't break it. (unless your doing a mod to your cabinet.

I've used .78 in two cabinets, .36 in another, and .86 in the latest one. I chose the .7x option though, as .78 is what is in my personal cabinet (as opposed to the ones I built for other people).

I run 089 because that's the romset I have. I only play up to about 1980's to 1992ish games.

I had assumed it was best to always use the most current version available. Looking at the poll and the replies, I gather that isn't necessarily the case. What is the benefit of using the older versions? Is it the case that some older versions support roms that the newest version does not?

Not necessarily an advantage/disadvantage. Mostly, there isn't a real reason to go through the hassle of updating.

^^gotcha, that makes sense. So if I'm looking to do a fresh install on a new computer, there's no real reason to consider anything other than the most current version?

.69 on the cab I had and sold.

.69 on my PC with a new version (.9x I think) for Golden Tees and a few newer games)

i just recently upgraded from .71 to .78...

I tried a newwer version but I didn't like tghe way some of the games came out....

We're running v. 94 on ours - like most here, it's the one for the set I have. Also, any version past 94 tends to cause Jurassic Park not to run properly, and to my wife, that's just not acceptable.

Sadly the latest, I haven't figured out how to properly make .71b work properly with my EasyMAMECab setup, because it is hell getting the modelines to work properly, and unfortunately .71b uses a different command format in the advmame.rc file...

Except for the oldest versions (GTG and GTG2), Golden Tee wasn't put into mame until very recently. .9x or .1xx I think.

So no, you won't play them on .74, and the newer games won't even be included in a .74 rom set. (except for the two I mention of course, which work fine in my .69 install)

I believe the newer GT's were introduced in .94u2 maybe? I built my whole cab with that in mind and .94 came out the same week I finished. Pure luck.
