MameWah vs. GameEx
« on: December 20, 2005, 10:51:05 pm »
I was set on using GameEx but have now heard about MameWah. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both? I know GameEx can be fully hidden with teh sheller but do I need to do the same with MameWah or is it completely hidden already?

Anything replied I'm sure will help me out :P

I've got a few beers in me, so I'll just throw out some cool features that GameEx has that Mamewah doesn't or doesn't do by default or as well. Don't get me wrong I like Mamewah but I lean a little more towards prefering GameEx.

Capture your own game movies.

Control Panel viewer (like johnny 5, etc) In the game overview you can select control panel and it will show you the CP for the corresponding game. Mamewah if memmory serves can show the CP's but I think it does it in a skin.

Launching external apps is much more simple.

Default configs for multiple emulators.

Its configuration utility is intuitive if not more so than Steve's Mamewah setip application.

Updates and feature requests available weekl. Upgrade can be done without removing app first.

Comes with a dozen or so themes including one or two animated ones (Galaxian theme is cool).

While installing it will ask you if you want to download arcade ambience.

Multimedia features include News (via RSS), internet Radio, DVD's, Jukebox mode for MP3's

I could go on... but do yourself a favor install both and check them both out. Can't go wrong with either.

In fact, the question is :  What do you want to do with your FE.

If you are looking for a Huge (and heavy)  Media Center use GameEX

If you want just choose game with a nice skin , run game and hide windows use MAMEWAH , or AtomicFE , or others..

If you want more complicated Skin features , Animated/ Multilayer Layouts ..etc..  use AtomicFE

All these FE can be used as Shell as well.  A Front End being a Front End , they does all  the same thing.(almost).

Then you can use big Truck to carry an egg....  Or just use a bike to carry the same egg...

Sometimes the truck is better,  Sometimes the bike is...  depends of the situation.

For FEs it is the same things.

It is SUCH a shame GameEX is not easily skinable. If it were not for this one major weakness I think it would be the front end of choice for a lot more of us.

I personally can't get it to look right on my HTPC.  The arcade skins, which I like, are completely out of alignment, changing font size tends to screw up certain text alignments, etc.

Basically, making the skinning a bit more 'malleable' would convert me I think.

As it is now, I'm getting MameWah up and working completely, then I'm going to start putzing around with GameEx.  My HTPC PC isnt the fastest so...I need to take that into account too.  Being that the most recent GameEx update addressed speed /memory issues, I'm more inclined to 'try again'.  That and the dev is a really nice guy who helps out users and adds features at an insane speed :).  (Dunno how long that will last before he burns out hehe :) )

I am new here but doesn't MameWah allow you to pick and choose the games that you want displayed?

Yes--you can filter.  Actually, if you use the mamewah config tool, it's ridiculously simple.

While i'm not an uber-fan of they way they modify some of your file names, I'll be damned if that tool isn't phenominal.

Here you go:  http://www.bluecamel.org/2005/02/26/mamewah-config-161/

Here's a different version (I've not tried it, but the different options look cool):  http://www.mamewah-setup.co.uk/

Yeah, I've been with GameEx since version 1.something and it just keeps getting better and better IMO. Tom did mention he plans on adding the skinning eventually, but he probably wants to get all the kinks worked out of the program itself before doing that big of an overhaul.
I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...

MameWah filtering of lists in the beta is nearly impossible (for consoles) however.  Since it doesn't read in GoodCodes, you can't filter based on them, and the lack of catver's for the console roms just makes things nuts.

And using the 1.61 setup proggie...well...I'm scared to do that lest it screw up my 1.62 install.

Does anyone know if GameEX will be able to filter anytime soon?
