If it has the words samsung and DLP in the one thing, you can't go wrong.

No personal experience though.

Is Samsung that good a name now?  I don't buy much stuff like this and it used to be that Samsung was the low end cheap crap.

They've gotten heaps better a while back.

I got me a DVI samsung DVD player which performs like a beast, 19inch LCD samsung monitors which I compared to LG, Phillips and Benq. All had too much video noise.
I didn't do Sony cause they're too damn expensive.

A friend has a 32" widescreen Samsung LCD which is very crisp on VGA. It actually performs better than his NEC plasma TV.

The only thing I wouldn't buy from them is Audio equipment.

Not surprised.

Never heard about ghosting effects, but research on display delay somewhere like avsforum.com

Some projection TV's have a delay which makes controller timing slightly off from whats happening on the screen. It's apparently just enough to make playing games difficult. Can't remember any more specifics than that. Once my setup was done, I kind of got out of the research mode.

AFTER i bought my mitsu DLP, I researched it.  lots of problems with rainbow, ghosting, etc.  but i never saw it.

the TV gets rAVE reviews.  It is gorgeous.

DLP ROCKZ.

I just had a custom cabinet built n my basement for it, with room for 3 19" TV's above.  It's sweet.  Can't wait to watch 4 games at once.

All I need is a reverse whizzinator, and I'll never get up.

i've been looking at a bunch of hd tv's lately.  up close, you can see the fuzz on the hd channels for a bunch of them.  i don't know if that is important, but  you should check out the display before you buy it.

27" is just fine for someone who doesn't sit far from it.

I'd rather have a $400 TV and $1500 in my pocket than a $1900 TV.

I have seen the lag effect (the picture and sound are not perfectly in synch) on Samsung DLPs with my own eyes (my neighbor just bought one last month) and believe me, it is NOTICEABLE and UNACCEPTABLE! It is really bad. Once you know it's there, you cannot ignore it. It will drive you crazy. There are workarounds but nothing really solves this SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW.

For me (and many others) the picture/sound asynchronicity on the Sammy is a deal-breaker. I suggest you skip it.

A friend of mine just bought the Mitsubishi 61" DLP and absolutely loves it, check that one out.

Eric.

On the Mitsu? Nope. I am not sure the exact model # he bought, but it's the 61 incher that runs about $4K street price - the 1080p model.

Agree -- but you have to live in a windowless bomb shelter. Light control is a major issue with front projection. But for a dedicated basement home theater, nothing beats it. Who wants to watch TV in a dark dungeon all the time though?

LCD -- cannot draw absolute blacks (so contrast suffers), and no sizes larger than 42 inches or so are affordable or available.

Plasma -- burn-in is a major issue. Play anything with bars on the top/bottom or sides (like if you watch 4:3 material and don't stretch it), you will experience burn-in just like old arcade monitors! (Well not "just like," but you get the idea.) The problem is serious -- even the lower-right-hand-corner channel markers can cause problems. I have no direct experience with this but check anywhere on the net, you will see plasma burn-in is a problem inherent in all plasma sets.

And don't forget, pixels blow very easily on these things.
Also, due to the nature of the technology (it using plasma gas), a plasma TV cannot be used above about 3000 meters above sea level (don't know the exact height)

I must be farther behind the time than I thought. The concept of a 42" tv sounds freakin gigantic to me.

Remember every TV these days is widescreen so 42 inches is really more like a 36 inch regular 4:3 TV in terms of image height. And if you watch 4:3 material (like a regular TV broadcast or a Stanley Kubrick movie on DVD) you will have bars on the left and right, and the actual picture image will be about the size of a typical 36 inch TV. That is NOT huge.

Screen size also has a lot to do with room size and set placement. A 42 inch TV can be placed close enough to your face that it fills your field of view as much as a 60 inch set farther away. But trust me bigger is better.

I fully understand all of the concepts.  It doesn't change my opinion that anything over about 32" is really unnecessary.

It's about cost, really.  People run out and feel entitled to a $2000 television and then wonder why they're still paying for it 3 years later.

My basement sports bar (under construction) will have about 10 TV's.

I love TV.

Not even sure I love the programming.  I love the TV.

It helps me pass the time between drinks.

Its all about priorities.  I have a 36" tv that I paid less than $600 for.  I doubt I'll replace it until everything is HDTV...unless it dies.  BUT, I spent over $2k on my last arcade game and you can make a functional machine with less than $500.

What was the game?

I mean, I fully understand that people can and will spend that on a giant TV.  What I don't get is that more and more people feel that 50"+ is all that could possibly be worth having and that TVs start at $1500+.

For the record I do not own a big screen TV. I am just a tech-junkie so I shop and research stuff like this and know a lot about it. I am happy with my 32 inch non-HDTV set. I go to my freinds' houses and watch their giant TVs, they were dumb enough to spend $4K on it. :) I would rather put more money into my mame obsession!!
