Xbox 360 Problem
« on: December 18, 2005, 12:12:35 am »
Hello,

My 360 isn't overheating or scratching discs.  When I play a DVD movie on the 360 the sound is off about 2 to 3 seconds.  This problem can be seen very easily when the camera is zoomed in on the face of an actor.  The actors mouth will finish moving, but you can still hear their voice.  Also, I know it's not the DVD giving me trouble.  I have tried three other DVDs and they all have a delay.  And the DVDs work fine in a normal DVD player.
Anyone else having this problem?

I just tried running a DVD without the hardrive thinking that maybe it was interfering, but the sound still doesn't sync up with the lips of the actor/actress.  I'm amazed no one else has this problem.  Luckily I have a year warranty on the 360 so once they are widely available I will get a new one.

Jonthebomb...

I haven't tried a DVD yet, but I'll give it a run tonight.  Anyway, what kind of display do you have?  Are you running it in 720p or 1080i?  It's possible that the xbox is taking a while to scale the video while outputting the sound as soon as it reads it.  usually something like this is a fifth of a second, however, and not a whole 2 seconds.  Like I said, I'll try the 360 at my place tonight and see if it does the same thing.

Ok, I tried a dvd on the 360 last night.  It all seemed to work ok.  If there was any delay, it was very minor.  Btw, are you using your 360 on a DLP tv?  I know the samsungs were notorious for having a bad delay if they were scaling from a resolution other than the native resolution.  Like 1 to 2 seconds is very common problem.  So, the xbox 360 runs in 720p for all your gaming, and the sound matches, since the tv isn't scaling.  DVDs run at 480p, so the tv takes a long time to scale the video and your sound running to the receiver processes the signal instantly, so you get the bad delay.

Let me know what TV you have, and I'll see if I can find if it is one of the problem units for video lag.

Later.

Unfortunately I'm running the 360 on a standard 27inch Toshiba TV with component video inputs.  I wish I had some type of HDTV.
So the 360 is probably the culprit.

Thanks for trying.

I'm not having a problem with my DVD at this time and I'm running it with a Sony 27" LCD HDTV. I think you might be right about waiting for them to be widely available and then looking into getting it repaired. So far I'm not having problems yet, but you never know. Microsoft has seemed to make a major misstep in this next generation. And to think, hardly anyone is able to get these right now. They'd have been been better off taking the extra month and a half to get the problems ironed out. After all, it's not like a ton of gamers are getting much of a chance to play right now.

Yeah, there shouldn't be any kind of lag on a normal non-hd tube tv.  From what I hear, if you are having problems with your 360, microsoft will send you a shipping tag to return it directly to them via next day shipping, then they ship you one next day as soon as they get it.  They don't want anyone to have a flaky 360.  Maybe give them a call and see what they will do.  I bet you would only be without it for 3 days, max.

I finally figured out my problem.  I brought my 360 over to a friends house to see how it looked on an HDTV (now I want an HDTV  :'().  Just to see if the problem was still there I tried a DVD on the 360 and saw the voices of the actors were perfectly insinc with their mouths.  The only thing that I changed is I went from digital sound to analog sound.

Once I got home I tried analog sound and the voices matched up with the mouths, but when I switched to digital the voices were behind the moving mouths again.  So I know the problem is with my digital sound cable.  I am using the monster digital sound cable I got for my original xbox.  I have called around to a few places, but it doesn't look like anyone sells a digital sound cable specifically for the 360.  I'm wondering what some of you guys and girls are using for digital sound cables for your surround sound systems?
Is there any place to buy a high quality digital sound cable that will work with the 360?

I doubt the problem is the cable.  The sound will sync up with a cheap-ass radioshack cable.  I'd say something's wrong with the digital sound chip in your Xbox (is there one or is it done in software?) or for some reason your Receiver either doesn't like the signal the Xbox 360 sends or the Receiver/Xbox's settings are wrong.

I've got the 360 running on a new sony sxrd hdtv w/ fiber optic cables using the standard component cables that came with it... and am having NO problems.  I use the x360 also for dvds and even cds... works great and never had to tweak anything.

I'd contract microsoft, my buddy has already sent his back, and another has had to do it 3 times I think now?  Both had great service and fast returns... no delays.  its all fedex or ups something overnight.  You call them, they send you a box paid shipping... send it out and less than a week its back.

is your only problem when playing dvds?  I'd call it a box issue and try to get another one... maybe you'll get a next version or something that won't have the problems others are having?

The problem is only with DVDs, game sounds are perfectly in-sync.  I'm going to try and get a hold of another digital video cable just to make sure it's not the cable acting up.  The one thing I'm worried about with giving up my old 360 and getting a new 360 is will I get to keep my game saves.  Yes, it has a detachable harddrive, but will they let me keep it and I don't have the money to buy multiple memory cards.

Well I'm completely stumped.  Today I exchanged my 360 in for a brand spanken new one and the sound can still not sync up with the video through a digital connection for DVDs.

I just tried swapping audio cables and now the sound does sync up with the video .  With my previous 360 neither cable made a difference.  So now I'm thinking the problem must have been a combination of the audio cable and the old 360.

Thanks for the help,
Jon

I know the samsungs were notorious for having a bad delay if they were scaling from a resolution other than the native resolution.  Like 1 to 2 seconds is very common problem.

No, the Samsungs that had lag were just bad enough to throw off timing on some music and sports games, but not so bad as to make something unplayable, which is what any game would be at 1 - 2 seconds of delay. Most people don't even notice the lag when it's present and it usually only made an appearance when you were running something in 480i or lower.
