Artwork files and pre .061 versions of Mame?

I've downloaded the artwork files from the Mame website. Specifically, the background image for Asteroids Deluxe and the bezel for Battle Zone. The Mame site states that these artwork files only work for Mame .061 and later.

I'm running Mame .037. I find it curious that this version of Mame by default has an artwork directory. Is there some kind of artwork that will work with earlier versions of Mame? Has anyone ever displayed artwork with a pre .061 version of Mame?

I have a slower computer so I'd prefer to stick with .037. Am I out of luck when it comes to artwork?
