  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
NOW..... I have all the mods done to this Gottlieb Rocky. I have ground wires running all over the place. I did the slam tilt mod. Went over ALL the solders on ALL the boards. Put in new header pins in the power supply and replaced all the pins including power and ground to the cpu. I did the extra power and ground pin mods from the driver board to the cpu. Now I'm down to the cpu problem. I think I might have a reset circuit problem for starters. I put the lead of my DMM on pin 40 of U1 and it goes to about 4.5vdc. But, about every five seconds (give or take) it will drop off. The displays will do something funky and then the meter will drop off and come back up. So I take it this means I have a problem in the reset circuit???? There's is no battery corrosion on this board, it is extremely clean! I have the game on right now and while I'm sitting here typing this relays will energise from time to time, and a coil may fire once in a while. What do you think??? reset circuit? Should I order the rebuild kit for it? I am assuming that once pin 40 goes to 4.5vdc it should stay there... correct?

Any input greatly appreciated!

Thanks

That reset board is well known for bad solder joints on the connector pins.

Good call Ken. I went over the solders on all the boards except that one. I went over them and now at least that problem is cured. It still comes up with "11 11" in the credits display, but at least it's not resetting now.

Thanks much!

OK, I found a couple of 6532's in a chip bin I have. I replaced U4 and it fired up and is working! Of course it has no sound *sighs* but at least the CPU is fixed. I have never EVER worked in a pin with so many issues as this one. Every single board has had problems on this thing without exception.

  • Sorry if I get any spit on you...
Karetaker,

That's great man!!  I'm not surprised it was one of the RIOT's, not surprised at all...   ;)

I know it's been a pain,  but look at it this way,  once this thing is done and out of your hair you will probably never get called on it again.  With all the mods and work you have done it should be pretty darn bulletproof.

Regards,
D

I can't thank you enough for all your input on the last post. I was really neck deep in frustration. Once I made my mind up that it wasn't going to be an easy fix I was working with a clearer mind. I learned SO much about the system 80 with this pin. Your input was TRULY helpful.

Thanks again!

Nice work.  I know a guy who has a nearly NIB Rocky... the thing is pristine.  Plays awesome.

Whelp that's it.... Rocky went home today. I took it back to the owners house. He was so happy he gave me an extra $100! Rocky is out of my shop and in thirty days it will be out of warranty and out of my life! Rocky didn't look too bad all shined up and shopped out. I'm just glad to see an empty spot where Rocky was sat.
