I think that GIMP will open and edit .psd files. I think.

If you goto downloads.com you should be able to find some free apps to open that file.

You can also download a free 30-day fully functional trial of Macromedia Fireworks, which is the next best thing to Photoshop.  It will fully import PSD files.

You can also download a trial of Photoshop CS2. Photoshop is one of the coolest programs in all the world (and Canada too).

Photoshop is a waste of money for casual users.

GIMP is free, and can do most things casual users need without having to shell out an arseload of cash for a program they'll be likely to use once or twice in their entire lives.  And yes, it will open pesky photoshop files like PSDs and the like:

Main website:
http://www.gimp.org/

Windows version download:
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/

And for the love of god don't start a "Photoshop is better than sex" style thread.  Yes it's wonderful, yes it's the defacto standard for graphics professionals, blah blah.  It's still too expensive for someone who wants to open and print a single file and get on with their life, so nerr.

Could we compromise and say Photoshop is better than sex with yourself?  Not better than sex with a partner of the opposite sex, but better than self-gratification, surely.

Depends on how narcissistic you are, really... I'd say we should avoid the topic altogether. If we must discuss it, then, at a minimum, Photoshop is better than pity sex.

Actually I've found the gimp to be rather useless on all counts.  While it can open psd files, it doesn't support all the filters that photoshop does, so if the author of the file did anything fancy, it won't show up.

I give all respect in the world to gimp users, but I've seen sample artwork done in gimp and similar aw done in photoshop and the differences are clear.

Getting back to the "topic":

I'd say photoshop is better than a dry hump with a fat chick, not because it sucks, but becuase I don't love photo manipulation THAT much.  ;)

Having access to photoshop there is a HUGE difference.

Photoshop is AMAZING and does everything

and Gimp is AMAZING for free... pretty good program...

But if you have the money (or license from somewhere else) photoshop is the way to go.

Didn't I just ask two posts ago for this NOT to be a Photoshop vs The World thread?

See my discalimer about "I want to open a file, resize it and save it as a JPG and not spend $500 on commercial software for a single use" above.  Last I checked, not everyone was a professional graphic artist, or had that sort of money to waste.

*SIGH*

How about if DiveMaster told us what format the art files are in. Then we can give a proper answer rather than debate.

NO MORE!!

Can somebody not convert these files to another format? I'll do it if the solution is as easy as this.

The issue here may be that Photoshop files generally contain layers. If it is out of a newer version of PS then it may contain adjustment layers and smart layers. I don't think that you can convert this. Just download the trial version and try to make it go.

I use it in my video work and go nuts when I do not have access to it. Too many good tools.

Heck there is always MS Paint.  ;)

And read what I said.  Gimp can't even open files properly half the time, so there is maybe a 50/50 chance this guyis going to be able to use gimp anyway.

As I said,  I've found gimp to be rather useless.

Really?  I've never had a problem with it.
