The only way this situation can be rectified in the long term is by abolishing the lawyers who get paid by the hour to protect their guilty scumbag clients from being punished. Start punishing the guilty - when they realise they will NEVER see the light of day again when they commit these crimes we may actually start to move forward in a few years.

Sadly, in this politically correct society this will never happen. The lawyers will get richer and become more famous, the evil will get set free and the community my kids grow into will suffer.

I'm f'n fed up with the same troubles here in the US- namby-pamby government, excessive laywer population, large immigrant population that has failed to integrate into American society, political correctness that forces us to let it continue unchecked, etc.  This place is going to hell in a handbasket, and the collapse is coming sooner or later if we continue down the road we're on.

I've actually considered sellig everything and moving to Australia, precisely because I thought things weren't that way there.  But apparently things are- how sad.  But I see one promising difference for you, Bones:  Your population is getting so upset over it, they're actually taking to the streets and doing something about it.  Nobody mis-understand me, I don't condone the rioting.  But I do see it as a sign that the population there isn't as apathetic as they are here.  In America, even the few people who pay enough attention to be aware of the problem can't be bothered to do more than whine about it on talk radio or post about it on an internet message board.  America, I fear, is too far gone to be saved.  Maybe Australia isn't.  Keep your fingers crossed, Bones- and if things turn around, get the spare room ready for me, hey?

I doubt it's lawyers causing the problem.  I don't know much about it, but if it's anything like America these minorities come from the poorest areas and, when arrested and tried, are probably using some kind of public defender which is almost, not quite, but almost the same as not having a lawyer at all.  Sorry if I'm not making any sense.  I have no idea how similar your legal system is to America's.

That comment says you DIDN'T get the gist of what Bones said.  It's ridiculous to say you don't see ALL arabs forming arab gangs, because clearly, that doesn't happen with ANY group of people.  He's using terms out of frustration, which IS the gist of what he's railing about, over what he sees his country becoming.  He's not meaning "them dang Ay-rabs are takin' over teh wurld", something you should be able to obviously discern wasn't the intent of his message.

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Authorities seeking to prevent more racial unrest in Sydney were keeping a close watch on places of worship, as Prime Minister John Howard acknowledged Wednesday this week's riots may have harmed Australia's image abroad.

Police were investigating whether an early morning fire at a Protestant church in Sydney was related to the rioting that gripped the city's beachside suburbs Sunday and Monday. Another church in the neighborhood, which has a large Middle Eastern population, had its windows smashed overnight.

''Incidents like this don't play well around the world,'' Howard said on the sidelines of an East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

But he added the violence should primarily be seen as an issue of law and order.

''What happened was a group of people broke the law,'' he said. ''We have to primarily see these things as breaches of the law and they should be dealt with firmly in that context.''

The violence erupted Sunday when more than 5,000 white Australians fought with police and attacked people they believed to be Arab immigrants at Cronulla beach in southern Sydney. The mob was angered over reports that youths of Lebanese descent beat two lifeguards at the beach a week earlier. That attack's motive was unclear.

On Monday night, youths of Middle Eastern appearance retaliated for the Cronulla rioting in several Sydney suburbs, smashing store fronts and attacking parked cars.

Forty people were hurt and 27 were arrested in two days of violence.

Calm returned to Sydney on Tuesday, though Arab immigrants were allegedly assaulted by whites in two other cities.

Police were investigating new mobile text messages similar to those that helped lead to the rioting on Cronulla beach, said New South Wales Police Minister Carl Scully. He said many of the text messages were hoaxes ''but some of them, we think, have credibility and we need to be aware that there is a risk of incidents continuing.''

He promised ''a huge police presence across Sydney on Saturday and Sunday,'' warning authorities were expecting trouble.

Morris Iemma, the leader of New South Wales state, said ''special attention will be paid to places of worship, our churches and our schools.''

Racial tensions in Australia have been rising in recent years, largely because of anti-Muslim sentiment fueled by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States and the October 2002 bombings on the Indonesian island of Bali that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.

They also were heightened by a gang rape case in 2002 in which prosecutors and witnesses said members of a Lebanese gang hurled racial abuse at their rape victims, all of whom were white.

I don't hate Lebs. I had the pleasure of working very closely to a Leb guy for quite a few years. We socialised, I met his family, they were gentle loving people. I don't pigeon hole any nationality.

I pigion hole the ---punks--- that decided to wreck havoc a few nights ago. These are the people that deserve to be punished. I feel badly for the good Lebanese guys and girls that will have to now deal with white boofheads in society that think they deserve a good kick up the ass just because they appear Arabic. Well, I think you'll find that economic class and poverty rates are a MUCH better predictor of crime rate than race.  Stepping up law enforcement  may be necessary, but don't be surprised if you end up with a Rodney King riot on your hand.

The nation probably DOES need to take measures to integrate these people and eliminate disparities in wages and job availability and education opportunities.  They need to do this because, in the end, it's going to be a lot more effective and less expensive than your own civil guerilla war.

It may not seem right to you to effectively reward them for bad behavior, but that's just pride ---smurfing--- with you.  ---fudgesicle--- pride.  You go down in the fourth....er, I mean, you do it for yourself, so that you can live in peace, not so you can reward the people who are smashing windows and ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.

Ironically, much of the Arab gangs are from areas within Sydney that are classed as the "inner suburbs". To put this into perspective, these homes are valued at approximately 2-3 times the price of my humble shack that is 30km from the city centre.

Many (but not all) of the gangs are from families that are quite well financed. These events in large are not the result of poverty or unemployment or poor education opportunities.

This is Australia. We don't let people starve on the street and everyone has a free ticket to education, free health care and unemployment benefits.

These gangs are angry at the world not because they have been failed by a system that wouldn't nurture their culture or provide them with opportunity, it is because they have no respect for our laws or people.

Cops have already been intercepting SMSs almost identical to the ones that gave the Sydney riots a jump start.
