Do i need a DVD burner for my MAME roms,or can i use CD-r(w)?

I don't see why it would make a difference.  They are both media as long as you can read em.

Does this dress make me look phat?

Probably.

I have a good knowledge of electronics, past projects include:
A handheld SNES (havent got a screen or case)
A handheld N64 (needs a case, power supply, and screen)
A remote in a NES controller(standard tv remote, the kind that comes with a tv)

Cool, got any pics of them?

Thats cool if i dont need a DVD burner, know of any good modchips? I dont have pictures of my projects, b/c i dont have a digital cam. there's not much to take a picture of with the N64/Snes projects, and for the NES remote, just imagine a Nes cotroller with an LED popping out of the former cord hole. If you wanna see completed Handheld systems, go to www.benheck.com. this guy has taken all the good systems (even neo-geo arcade boards) (except xbox, gamecube and dreamcast) and made them portable. Check out the forums too.

That depends on what DVD drive your xbox has. My xbox doesnt like cd-r's. Check xbox scene for a complete compatiblity list

I was planning on doing the same - using a modded xBox running MameD0x. However, once I modded it and installed xBox Media Center, I found the xBox to be much more usefull hooked up to my HDTV as a media server. So I went and pieced together a cheap 1.6 ghz AMD Semperon based PC for abut $200. I am in the process of configuring it for full time MAME use in my cabinet. The PC just seems a bit more flexible when it comes to controls and also organizing ROMs etc.  Just my 2 cents!

What modchip did you use?

I understand that, but a 1.6 Ghz PC cant run half-life 2 or halo, can it? ;D

I used a Xenium SPICE chip because I am not much of a solderer, and if I ever needed to install it into a rev 1.6 xbox I could. Cost me a bit more  than other options but I am happy; it was money well spent in my opinion.

And yah maybe someday I will pick up another Xbox and install it into my cab with a KVM switch using an Xbox to VGA adaptor...

But for right now I think the flexibility of the PC is best. Plus you have Virtual Pinball on the PC! :-)

If you don't want to do anything fancy (larger hard drive, lcd display, etc) a softmod works great check out http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/114/62/ the only problem I have with the Xbox is the Lightguns seem a little inaccurate (in MAME), they work great with NES and XBOX games, i havn't tried PC light guns to really compare. Also the processor is too slow to run 3-4 player N64 games, maybe if you did the memory upgrade they would run better.

Xbox Media Center is awesome, thats what I use mine for 95% of the time

Merry Freakin' Christmas! I got my Project Arcade book, so now i can make detailed plans. I plan on first designing a full size 2 player panel(with enclosure for portability) and then moving on to an actual cabinet. I want to use a modchip b/c softmods are retarded, and i do plan on upgrading memory for other emulation. I just ordered Namco musem vol. 1 for my PSX, so i can test out the panel later with the PSX.
